As an artist, not only do I think you're reasonable to want comments, I think it's the reader's duty to engage at least somewhat. That's how fan spaces thrive, and people who don't make art or fic forget that they have an important role in this ecosystem too. Or just straight up don't care anymore.

Fandom spaces are a negative feedback loop these days and I don't blame people for bailing. Yeah, you should make your project for an audience of you first, but the act of sharing your creation and getting some kind of engagement is what art is all about.

Disagree. Somehow the JP fan ecosystem thrives without people leaving comments - you like/reblog and that's it. Direct interaction almost never happens and yet artists and writers happily continue to produce art and fic despite that.
