The pic was supposed to demonstrate it. He looks at people who’re goofing off with over-the-top horror art, and he thinks it’s some kind of revelation when he says they’re not serious about it. Yes, Bill, Alice Cooper doesn’t actually think clowns will eat him when he sleeps.

Wow, you did miss the joke! The joke is that Calvin (and the various Moral Authorities he wants to shock, like a parent) do take it seriously, when it's obviously not serious when you think about it for a second.
