Isn't that text Photoshopped?

Sure looks like it

No, that's a real Calvin & Hobbes comic. But I think the OP has decided "Bill Watterson's characters are written as lecturing mouthpieces for his exact personal thoughts and feelings on everything"...and not, you know, comic characters, who usually say things because it's in-character and hopefully funny.

DA

So often they ARE mouthpieces though... not saying this particular comic is, or that Watterson in particular does, but you know, in general. It's easy to see why/how someone would think that since it's often true

He was prone to lectures, especially in later years, but I was generally unbovvered.

Every author has their characters express some of their real-world feelings, some of the time. If you're going to complain about "all the author's flaws and biases," it should be based on more than "I'm complaining about every time one of his characters said something I disagree with."

...Or, in this case, OP seems to agree with the character, but is still mad? Because the comic is about a character hearing this opinion for the first time, and, I don't know, OP thinks Watterson is personally patronizing the readers when he draws a 6-year-old character learning something new?

Huh? All I said is it's not some unknown or rare thing that comic artists have mouthpiece characters that voice their opinions, and it's common enough that it's understandable that some people think it's happening when it may not be.

I dunno how to respond to the rest of your comment because I'm not OP and can't speak for what they think.

The way Watterson talked in the C&H Tenth Anniversary Book about Calvin and his parents made it clear that he didn't believe everything he had them say. If any character is his mouthpiece, I'd take an educated guess that it's Hobbes and sometimes Susie.

"I'm going out of my way say: I'm not saying he's doing that"
"He isn't doing that"

sigh

?????????

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ok sorry, I wasn't accusing you of saying that. I was making a generalized comment about the discussion that OP is trying to have and the fact that a lot of people clearly do think that. My response to you was meant to be an addition to your comment, not a rebuttal of things you didn't say.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT Thanks for the clarification. I'm honestly not sure what conversation OP is even trying to have tbh. My comment was more about it being common enough in OTHER artists that OP bringing that over to artists that don't do it isn't surprising to me, haha

That's the original comic text, dunno about the secret itself.

Bill Watterson has always been known as kind of a cranky old man, even when he has a good point. Not sure why this is new to people now.
