Considering that the character is not real and can't actually BE anything other than what she was written, the way she's written is the way she's supposed to be in the framework of the time the books were published. So no, she's not explicitely trans. You can headcanon her that way, it's not exactly a revolutionary take on the character and you'll find plenty of likeminded people in fandom, but to say "I'm right and all adaptations are WRONG" as if your headcanon was fact... that's not it.

it frustrates me that a female character who isn't 100% feminine has to be trans in the eyes of some people. why must we be so rigid with gender roles and behavior?

Ayrt
I mean, she does insist several times tgat she wants to be treated like a boy so reading this as trans is a legitimate headcanon but what a lot of people who insist George is absolutely without a doubt trans ignore is how so much about this is based on the still rigid gender roles of the time the books were written in. Same with several historical figures who disguised themselves as men to work/study because they weren't allowed to do it as women. Were some of them trans? Possibly. Is there 100% proof? Rarely.

And George explicitly says in text, multiple times in multiple books, s/he even hates wearing girl's clothes instead of male apparel, yet the recent BBC series and several new covers show her/him in female clothing and even (most hated of all, to George, as it says in-text), skirts. So there is obviously a deliberate neglect of core characterisation. I don't see fans being unreasonable to object, and wonder about a possible political agenda at play given everything happening Britain right now.

Sure, that IS a departure from the character and should be adressed. That doesn't mean George is canonically trans though. Objecting to an incorrect characterisation and portrayal of a character is entirely valid and you CAN absolutely debate the possible reasons behind it. That doesn't change the fact that in canon and in the context of the books, George is not explicitely trans but a gender roles rejecting tomboy who was heavily based on the author herself, as she is on record having stated.
