Transcript - Great British Bake Off

[Text: She shared: "I'd never watched it. I still haven't watched it. I didn't understand it. Cakes are readily available in the shops. I didn't enjoy the process. You stand at the end of a long table for hours when Prue and Paul taste everything and we literally didn't speak or taste anything. I used to say, 'Can we not sit down? I'm not contributing,' but no."]

That's a quote from Sandi Toksvig about Great British Bake Off. I don't fault her for not "getting" baking or the show. I *do* fault her for accepting a huge paycheck for presenting a show where her contempt for baking and the show itself was, to me, quite clear. I wasn't surprised when I found out she quit because she didn't enjoy it. It was obvious. She shouldn't have let her attitude poison GBBO.

I had no idea that she felt that way.
I still want Noel to leave. He's obnoxious and not funny and seems to have obvious contempt for the show, far more than Sandi. Everything from him breaking the cups by banging on them to asking that one lady who was making adorable dragons and unicorns out of cake "why can't you do anything normal?" ugh.

Ugh, he annoyed me so much on Taskmaster but I didn't know he was even worse on Bake Off.

I've never watched Taskmaster.
The ONLY thing I actually like about Noel is he wears cool shirts. And I usually get along just fine with goths.

Has Noel Fielding ever been funny?

this friend of mine used to watch the damn Mighty Boosh ALL THE TIME and I normally loooove British humor but I found that show about as funny as getting hit by a truck.

I did not get thise vibes from her at all! I liKed her time on the show. And enjoyed when she went on Prues's personal cooking show. They seem like good friends.

Her season was the last one I watched (because I hate Paul and couldn't deal with him without Mary Berry) but Sandi seemed completely fine. She was kind to the contestants and interested in their lives and how they were doing.

I hate it when people are rude/dismissive of stuff they don't like. And it's even worse that she participated in it, despite not liking it, and then shat on it. Like, I'll be honest, I have zero interest in that show myself, it just isn't something I care about at all. But rather than being contemptuous of it, I just leave it alone for the people who do enjoy it.

This goes for so many things in life.....sports, musical artists, art, video games....you don't have to like it, but why not just let it be instead of being an asshole.

Idk I don't think she's being an asshole, just talking about her experience. She didn't say the show was awful and should be cancelled, just that it was hard for her to do it for a multiple of personal reasons. And I imagine she didn't know it would be that way when first agreeing. I see no harm in trying something outside your wheelhouse and then admitting it wasn't making you happy or working for you.

GBBO was a very well-established, famous show before Toksvig got involved. I cannot imagine her NOT understanding what it was about, that it heavily featured baked goods, her role in said show, etc. All of those things were known factors.

I don't disagree that she never seemed enthusiastic or invested, but I also don't think she was any worse about it compared to Noel Fielding or Matt Lucas.

It's possible it was a contractual thing or a quid pro quo kind of thing (you can be host of this, but you have to do that).
