I love the old web (went on a surf through Neocities yesterday, highly recommend over doomscrolling!). I am also a proponent of decentralized fandom spaces (Am a Fediverse user). But shutting down fanfic archives will definitely not bring in new blood.

I've only had the inclination to learn coding and possibly make my own personal website BECAUSE of the support I've gotten in more centralized spaces, and wanting to make something that's distinctive and my own.

Most new fans, especially young ones, will not feel like learning a relatively niche skill before they can even see how much traction their fics will get.

And yes, I'm aware this is likely a deliberate strawman. It just happened to bring up something that had been on my mind.
