These books are seriously overrated. They are important because they kept Star Wars popular and continued things. But they are not as good as the fandom likes to think and are really dated in ways the OT isn't. There are far better Star Wars books out there.

I agree! I read them years ago and they were pretty average - about the quality of most generic tie-in novels - and I doubt they've got better with age.

The funny thing is, Zahn has far better Star Wars books. His writing definitely improved.

They aren't my favorites, but that's mostly because I'm less into hard scifi than the sort of fantasy/scifi mix that Star Wars usually is. These books certainly still have the force and some of the fantasy elements, but it much more heavily leans into hard scifi and military stuff.
