I wrote some fic for a tiny fandom with no new fics in over a year, and shared in the small-but-active fan server. Based on the view count, no one has read it.

I understand this is the fate of SFW fics featuring the less popular ship. But damn! You people are starving, and you don't even want to taste the dinner I brought you!?

People might be at the point where they only check for new fic once in a blue moon, since there rarely is any. I know I'm like that with some older dead fandoms.

There are just some things I won't touch. If we keep to the culinary metaphor, I once didn't eat at a restaurant because my dad refused to let me get anything until I tried a bit of calamari. I wasn't about to put that in my mouth, so, yeah, I starved.

Sorry you haven't found your audience yet. Just remember you can't shame people into becoming your audience.

OP. You'll notice that I posted this here, and not in that server, where the people I'm talking about could see it and be shamed by it. So I think I'm doing alright on this so far.

Think of it like allergies, or better yet, intolerances. Even the most spectacular meal wont get eaten if it isn't palatable to the person served.

This. I don't care if it's the only fic in the fandom, I'm not going to read it if it's for a ship I don't like. It's that simple.

+1

sorry OP, I don't care how good your burger is if I came in here for sushi. I'm sure it's a nice tasty burger, but I don't want a burger today.

there's a certain level of desperation required in fandom for people to just read anything with the fandom label on it no matter how much they hate the ship, trope, kink, or even characters featured in the fic, and maybe no matter how starved they are for content, they aren't that desperate yet.

Did you put it on AO3 as well? There are plenty of things I've liked enough to look for fic for, but not enough to bother going to a whole other server.

I agree with this. A wider distribution will make it more likely that people will find the fic, OP, even with it being for a niche fandom.

Since OP mentioned view count, I assume yes, they posted it on AO3 first and dropped the links to the fics in the Discord server and can see that no one from the server clicked because the hits on AO3 didn't go up from that.

To be honest, that happened to me too once. Actually, it was a bit worse -- I received a gift fic in a gift exchange for a very slow fandom and shared it as a rec in an active fan server. The pairing was the biggest one in the fandom before the fandom kinda died (became very slow and small). Well, kind of -- it's a bit complicated to explain but there's a character pre- and post-memory loss, and the post-memory loss one is the one involved in the juggernaut ship, but they're kinda the same person, just with two very different personalities; this fic featured both personas.

Anyway, I looked at the fic's stats for like a month afterward and saw that no one from the server had checked it out -- stuck on single-digit hits and one (my) kudos.

To be frank, it kind of soured me on all the still-active members of the server except for the one quirky member who had never been into het ships, the juggernaut included, and exclusively posted rarepairs that people also never paid attention to. That person alone remains in my good books lol. Anyway, since then, I've decided I post fic in that fandom strictly for myself only and don't share it with the server anymore or expect any attention for my fic (or fics people have kindly written for me) from anyone except the occasional random passerby who is only reading fics and isn't in any fandom servers, possibly.

I'm confused. You soured on the entire fandom because people weren't interested in a fic you posted? Why should they have to read fics just because you posted them?

This has happened to me. Never a fun time.

My lesson learned was to drop my fics off and don't look back. I don't have it in me to be a writer who gets engagement.

Like, not only do I tend to write for small fandoms or rare/crack pairs, but I can never time my fic releases right that it would garner interest and engagement soon after I post. I don't network in fandom so I don't have any hype mans or even people to talk to and direct towards my fics.

I've tried my hand at being that sort of fanfic writer and I wasn't very good at it. I'm better at being the sort of writer who posts completely anonymous and I don't tell anyone that I wrote a fic.
