Yumeshipping

Is it not just a new name for x reader fic? Which is just a written version of fantasizing about being with a character?

I don’t think it’s a new term because I first heard it back in 2010 or so.

Oh wow. I only first heard of it like 2 years ago. I know I'm out of the fandom loop in a lot of ways but still. I guess I'm further OotL than I thought!

I think it's another, extremely irritatingly ~pwecious word for self shipping

Yup, that is my understanding too.

It's self-shipping, so not quite the same as readerfic - yumeshipping is specifically the author/character whereas readerfic is the reader/character. Also yumeshippers seem to be much more aggro about their character and headcanons and "protecting" their character from other ships.

As an outsider, this is my sense too. (It was a new term to me maybe eight months ago.)

The people I encounter who read or write fanfiction that’s either author-insert or reader-insert are mostly pretty chill. There seems to be a shared understanding that everyone’s there to share similar fantasies about given character. They don’t get possessive and they’re rarely focused on only a single character.

But the people who self-identify as yumeshippers seem to take it much more seriously. Them/their fave is their indisputable OTP and they can be possessive or territorial about how other yumeshippers are shipping themselves with the same character.

I guess you see some of that among professed “self-shippers” too, but maybe I just happened to not be exposed to as much of that.

Yumeshipping as a name has been around for a longer time than x reader fics. I have a friend who self ships and have had the tag blocked since about 2015.
