Sometimes ̶l̶i̶f̶e̶ fandom just isn't kind.

1. tired of corporate web. back then you could hang out with x fandom from y platform and it didnt feel like everyone was supposed to be connected and know everything going on in a fandom. now its bigger than ever yet everybody seems to know everyone at least enough to run with some gossip, deem someone problematic herd metality etc
2. people at cons seem to only cosplay for clout and sns pics and money and sex - bye amateur sewing hello hot models in miccostumes
3. everyone is 19 in fandom in 2026. i get you were forced to grow up online but ugh i hate to reference an old thing and NOBODY knows it
4. speaking of which The Herd Mentality. at some point it was ok to just chat about shared interests, now people want to get all deep like whats your religion political views etc. dude i just wanna talk about guys fucking its not deep
5. i want to share like my otakatsu and rare merch that i got 20 years ago but all thats out there are larpers, kids who will get sad because they cant buy stuff yet and people who look at nerd stuff for the money not like cool shells i found on the beach
6. everything disappoints. EVERYTHING. its ai fanworks, ai official works, consummerist trends, anything for views, horrible privileged men always enabled to be disrespectful, rudeness all over, its all money and clout
7. apparently people who have barely spoken to me have feelings about me and lord knows what gossip went around. discord and cyberstalking andhacking apps ruined everything but the police laughed at my complaint so
8. the cons suck too now that everything is Corporate always the same panels people (== web influencers) (everyone walking around either is a web celeb or wants to be apparently) etc
9. whenever i feel close to getting something nice it gets ruined somehow. bl novels got popular? yeah but only the 800 page historical chinese ones. bl drama? yeah, it's all very awkward with thai actors or very pwop or both. genshin? oh don't worry we will ruin its popularity by focusing on the battle system only whale dudebros care about and make everyone migrate to the next hot game and then the next. every anime gets a remake except for the ones i would actually want a remake of. sometimes spending $200 in bootleg plastic to craft an itabag you're too afraid of wearing outside as an old lady because the kids hate old people in fandom and there's discourse on tiktok on how non repeat itabags suck (ie go broke buying mandarake pins or go home) is Peak fun. like .. we the fandom autistics used to have fun in fandom yknow? it wasnt about gooning at least not for me but here we are, it feels like i'm doing it wrong because it's not about the gooning and the discourse and the gossip/clout for me lol.

maybe i'm getting old FOR REAL for fandom. aging, financing etc out of fandom. gotta enjoy my stuff alone and understand that the best way to enjoy this is offline and alone

2. I miss seeing cardboard gundams and closet cosplays. Nowadays you can just order a whole costume from aliexpress, back in my day you had to learn how to sew or get creative in other ways!

Yes! People used to get crazy creative and do really fun shoots. Now it's like everything needs to be artistic = instagrammable. Ew

I'd like to write a more eloquent response to this, but I'm tired. So I'll just say

+1000

I agree with all of it.

My heartfelt highfive :(

I mean, I'm in my forties and frequently use my (pretty basic) ita bag to hold phone/wallet/etc for trips to the grocery store or library, and I've never had a judgy/rude interaction, but I have had people of different ages and genders compliment my bag, either for the pins/keychains or the overall bag itself, so I'd say go ahead and wear it out to non-fannish places! A lot of people aren't going to care, but some people just like seeing whimsy/personality even if they don't know the fandom(s). If cons and fan spaces are letting you down (and I do feel a LOT of these complaints), I don't think you have to put away fannish things. You might find people in the wild care less about discourse and snobbery than the people making the most noise in fan spaces.

Yeah, itabags and fannish keychains/pins aren't even remotely uncommon to see around these days. I've got a bunch of fandom keychains and pins on my key lanyard and purse and I've never gotten anything but compliments on them. (In fact, my FFXIV ones usually get people asking me what server I play on since I have keychains with my primary job symbols.)

Maybe it depends on where you live. I'm in a smallish town and I've only ever seen two teenagers wearing itabags in the wild. People were judgemental when I was a teen with a couple of kawaii keyrings ("omg kiddy") so I don't even wanna know what it'd be like now. People my age do attend cons but most do so with their kids. I don't see a problem with any of this, I just feel very, okay, so there isn't a place for me here anymore huh. I kinda knew that this would happen, because it's happened with every generation of women I ever knew and maybe that's why it's so disappointing.

I'm 50, live in a small town and wear fandom stuff all the time. People are way less judgy now than when I was a goth nerd teen in a slightly larger town, maybe because I'm old enough that they can see I don't give a shit about their opinions. A lot of women do seem to want to not stand out, but there's plenty who are just doing their own thing.

That’s good. I’m not as old as you, still get mistaken for younger and have social concerns like employment in a small town so I prefer to stay safe but I am glad to know people are getting more accepting in some places

I'm 40 and get compliments on my Slullpanda or Hello Kitty bag charms, and my dresses which are quite alternative. I've seen a young girl who wears angel lolita clothes in public and also seen her in a Japanese-style school uniform (she is blonde and western ftr), and she has more courage than I would have had at her age.

I used to work at a store that sold Hello Kitty and Sanrio stuff and no small number of the people who bought it were middle-aged women, amusingly.

I have Pokémon keychains on every bag and people either ignore them or compliment them. In general people really don’t care what you’re doing and strangers really don’t spend time judging us like we might think.
