Where were *you* hanging out? I never saw any of that stuff.

I can remember it being on E-groups, and whatever was before e groups, and in certain fandoms slash was rare.

Nowadays, if there is fanfiction, there is slash, and there has to be a main slash pairing!

ONELIST. That's what egroups ate.

Yes, we were all reading different mailing lists, it happens. Just because you haven't seen it in your fandoms doesn't mean there was a porn shortage.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
This. I first discovered porny fanfic - both slash and het - when I was at uni. I'm 33 now. And I've read zines from much much much earlier that had PWP fic in all flavours. The OP is deluded if s/he thinks there wasn't just as high a percentage of porny fic around long before s/he ever found fandom.

Also just because a fic has porn doesn't mean it can't have plot. I'm in the middle of writing a long plotty fic and I just wrote 5000 words of porn in the middle of it. Most of the really long fic that I like best has a nice mixture of plot and sex.

I was a huge fandom hopper back in the 90s. X-Files was my first online fandom (this was... 1997, I guess), but by the time mailing lists emerged ('99-2002), I was into due South, the Sentinel, Highlander and those are just the ones I spent a lot of time in.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Sentinal and Highlander were well known fandoms, but they were always slash fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my point: they said that there was no slash or porn on Yahoogroups, and I pointed out that wasn't true, because I had belonged to several slash fandoms that were centered on Yahoogroups.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is that you belonged to the fandoms which tended to be more slashy. These days it seems like all fandoms are mostly slash, something that you would not have seen ten years ago.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So, which fandoms are you talking about? What were these beautiful, slash-free places like?

No, really, I'm curious. I'm trying to think of major fandoms from the '90s that had zero slash presence and can't come up with any.

[identity profile] cobryn-moy.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
ST:TNG had very little in the way of slash. There was the odd P/Q here and there, but BonC and Imzadi fic absolutely overwhelmed it.

X-Files never seemed to have much of an organised slash presence.

Personally, I would count the glorious femslash fandoms of yore as distinct from slash, but YMMV.

Then there were some smaller fandoms that tended to be very het-dominated, iirc - Lois & Clark, Dr Quinn, Roswell.

To be honest, I'm inclined to think that the real difference was that there were far fewer meta-fannish places, so one just didn't run into fen with different shipping preferences all that often.

Okay, I was part of the Mulder/Krychek mailing list. There were Mulder/Skinner and a Skinner/Krychek ones as well, although I never much cared for Skinner so I ignored those. There was a large slash presence for X-Files. And we damn chatty.

Sentinel and X-files has/had a ton of gen stories. They both have huge archives with 1000s of them. I read X-files during the first TV run and there were and still are case stories galore. I'm not sure where you're looking, but it's obviously in the wrong place.
