True. This is me presuming the couple of anon responses on this thread are from OP. If they're not, top half still stands. ...Second half does, too, as a factual observation on overall quality of decades-old fanfic.

Scanning the threads, OP does seem to think there was also a mystical time before slash ("B.S.", if you will) which makes me wonder if s/he has ever heard of Star Trek.

Drive-by UChi high five! Though seriously, I did not need to know that. I was having such a nice day. ...Okay, I wasn't because it's finals time and I've done crap all to study, but so begins the long, cold hibernation that makes me wonder exactly how much I hate myself to have willingly left the west coast.

I was always under the impression that Star Trek was the advent of modern fandom *AND* the cradle of slash creation.

Pretty much this.

There was some slash and fandom both before Trek, but Trek brought it to mainstream prominence and set the standard for large fandoms and fandom organization and interaction. Given that the oldest, largest mainstream fandom was built on a non-subtle foundation of slash it's sort of silly to pretend there was a time when fanfic was all gen or soft het.

They existed, they just had a proper sense of shame about it and didn't deserve any press unless they murdered little children or something equally heinous. It was a simpler, purer time.

Yeahhhh. I'm from way down south (not quite FL, but pretty darn close), so this right now is what winter was like for me back in the home state.

On the other hand, the snow is pretty? Though there's also going to be a bit of a storm come Wednesday, supposedly ("blowing snow"), but here's to hoping the weathermen are wrong.

Good luck on the finals! (And I would then include a bit of a funny anecdote here about the law students that just got chased out of South Campus Dining Hall, but I don't think you need to know about the moody undergrads being moody. Haha.)

Yeah, the snow is pretty until I have to shovel the car out of the parking lot. My favorite is "wintry mix"--it's so festive! Snow AND ice AND rain!

I'm always surprised when law students venture across the midway. They keep us segregated for everyone's mutual safety and comfort. They must have been 1Ls who haven't figured it out yet, just like the grad students who inexplicably come take classes at our big glass box.

Ah, then there's someone upthread pulling for your side of things. I'm totally curious which fandoms you were in that had tons of gen fic with little to no slash. I've read for a lot of different fandoms over the past 12 years and all but two (which are small to begin with) have a lot of ship fic, PG-rated through porn, and every series that has two or more canon male characters who interact has slash.
