From the way the secret was written it sounded like the OP stopped taking them for personal reasons (they say "for a number of reasons," not "because they don't work" or "because of adverse effects"), and also they didn't mention anything about talking to their doctor. That coupled with the statement "I ought to be concerned about my situation but I'm not" made it seem to me like the OP did it without their doctor's approval.

I mean, why would they be concerned if they talked to their doctor and got their approval?

Well, because there's nothing to be concerned about if you have a drug-resistant mental illness that's destroying your life, obviously.

Psychiatric drugs aren't a magic wand. They don't always work.

...I was trying to be slightly more tactful, but yes, that's pretty much what I was going to say. Full disclosure: I've never been on medication myself, but I imagine even with a doctor's approval going off them is a risky thing to do.

You can't just stop taking most psychiatric medications. A few years ago I switched from Depakote to Lamictal and it took me weeks to transition. I had to slowly wean myself off the Depakote before I could start slowly easing myself onto the Lamictal. Going cold turkey can be dangerous, especially for someone dealing with psychosis.

Depends on the person, but considering that many mental illnesses are basically the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, yeah, meds actually do work. For most people out there you need a combination of meds and therapy. I don't think any bipolar I person out there can get by without meds, though. That's like expecting a schizophrenic person to lead a normal life without meds. Perhaps it's possible but not very likely.

In any case, stopping your meds without talking to your doctor first is incredibly unwise
