Tell me about it. I've been wanting to rewatch the first seasons for a while, but knowing how things went south and how much potential was wasted is just terribly disenheartening.

Amongst many other problems with the writers' actions, I can't stop being struck by the sheer laziness of introducing the angels in the first place.

Hey, instead of going through with this morally complex and bleak season where Sam is losing himself as a result of saving Dean with his abilities, and Dean is severely fucked up and damaged from Hell (you know, like we've been setting up), let's do that other idea that we said we weren't ever going to do and write everything else to fit in to it!

Hey, instead of going through with this morally complex and bleak season where Sam is losing himself as a result of saving Dean with his abilities, and Dean is severely fucked up and damaged from Hell (you know, like we've been setting up)

Damn just your short premise of what could/should/would have been if not for the strike sounds 10 times better and more original than what we actually got. Just make me more depressed why don't you;)

I honestly think the writers don't give a flying fuck about the show anymore. They don't seem to bother to look even three episodes behind them before they either make a retcon or another contradiction. The show have been sinking/stinking since season 4, still love the brothers though and that is why I just can't go away.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, sorry. I've just been lamenting these same points for a long-ass time now. To me, it was just so obvious where things were progressing from S3, even with the Strike making it a little screwy. Prepare for a tl;dr.

Sam was growing darker, more vicious and willing to kill, working with Ruby, to prepare himself to fight the war (whatever happened to 'all' the demons let out of the Gate, btw?), and to save Dean. For the first time (and as laid in in AHBL II, when the writers still understood consistency), Sam needed to protect Dean, instead of the other way around.

Dean, on the other hand, was more vulnerable than he had ever been, faced with his own mortality and an eternity of torment. Reflecting on his life, his regrets, his fears, all sorts of things drudged up: issues with John, his desire for a life outside of hunting.

Plus, John sacrificed himself for Dean, Dean did for Sam, the next logical step was Sam going off the deep end for Dean. It tied into everything. The mytharc, the theme of the show, Sam's development as a character. When it didn't happen, it was the beginning of the end of the way things used to be (although I didn't realize that until much later).

Anyway, I agree, the writers really seem like they could care less at this point. Which is sad, b/c I can get over things not going exactly the way I want if they're just well-written and sound, which NONE of this has been. How do you ret-con shit you set up in the same season? I mean, really, that takes some serious apathy and/or arrogance.

Like you, I love who these characters used to be, I want to see the conclusion to their story, and fandom still passes the time. That's about all I get out of things now.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
That Sam never got to save his brother is a freaking tragedy and like you said this is exactly the moment where the whole thing went off course and into the land of "logic need not apply" Great post and I wholeheartedly agree.

I keep hoping we'll get the brothers back to something similar to what they were and Kripke promised us this season would be all about their big reunion, but I really should have remembered that Kripke is liar who lies:) Still remember that interview where he clearly said that there would never be any angels on the show and that the humans were the only force of good in the spn world. I freaking loved that dark and gritty prospect and it is present in the first three seasons but then season 4 turned everything on it's head.

:( Omg anons, reading these comments is like READING MY OWN THOUGHTS. I was feeling so frustrated, especially because too many of the people around me were MAD SQUEEING about it. It took me a long time to realize what was really happening-- for all of S4 I only knew I had lost the drive to watch the show ever week. D:

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
My story, exactly. At the beginning of S4 I was ecstatic, excited, still in love with the show. By the end, I wasn't sure I was even going to keep watching, and it's only marginally better now.

It was a long decline over S4 and the real beginning of the end for me was when I read the article that said they were in fact going to do all of the things I had been looking forward to if the Strike hadn't happened. It's one thing to be bummed they didn't take that direction, but that they had been planning to, and just decided not to? Ouch.

Anyway, I met a few people on the old forum I frequented that agreed and a lot more since I've come to LJ. I started a comm where people could talk about this stuff without being told to GTFO/stop watching and everything, and it's helped me burn off SO much frustration, you wouldn't believe. Sorry for the ramble, lol. I just feel your pain all too well.

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
DDDD: I've never, ever paid any attention to the production side of things-- no spoilers, no interviews (except one time during season 3 I think, haha, I can't even remember why), no 'behind the scenes' anything other than gag reels... so that is news to me. BUT HEARTBREAKING NEWS.

Okay that's a lie when I found out Castiel was supposed to die and instead took over Anna's role I went D: at how much suddenly made sense, BUT I DIDN'T GO LOOKING FOR THAT IT CAME TO MEEE.

:((((( I'm glad there are more than just me out there. I've never really wanted to participate in SPN fandom that way, but knowing you guys are out there is a huge, huge comfort. Just. Bah. :( Why isn't there awesome gen fic that rewrites seasons 4/5 the way they should have gone? DDDDDDD:

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Any chance I have to link that article: http://i48.tinypic.com/91gkes.jpg

I had the same reaction. It was kind of crushing, in a way. But for the whims of Kripke and probably a couple of writers, could've been an AWESOME season four.

It is hard to be the one person out of fifty not able to squee, I know. Meeting other people on LJ has been sanity-saving. I probably would've bailed on this fandom already if I hadn't. If you want, I can send you a link to the comm if you ever have the desire to drop by. :)

Ah, sorry I can't be more helpful on the fic. I'm a Wincester, so all the 'Sam saves Dean from Hell' fic I've read is chock full of slash. Summer after S3 was really like the golden age of Wincest fic. :(

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
:) I'd love a link. You can PM me, if linking directly would ~out you~ or whatever, haha.

B| Dude. I am also a wincester. But seeing it be gen would be so satisfying because then you could force everyone-- especially the people who think S4&5 are BETTER than the previous seasons-- to see the error of their ways without the stigma of things they don't ship being the focus.

DDD: Seriously, we got some epic stuff. It's like... IDK, it reminds me of "post HBP AU" in level of "the fandom is never going to get sick of it" plotlines. XD

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, I'll PM you. :D

Oh, well, awesomeness about the Wincest then. I see what you're saying. I do wish there were a sterling gen example of that as well that we could all point to.

(I am considering writing one myself, but fic writing/reading has been exceedingly difficult with my like of the show so battered). It's sad that it might be easier to write that fic at this point without the Wincest. S4/5 era Wincest requires much reworking of canon to be palatable to me because the soul of it has been so absent.

But, on a happy note, YES, that is a trope that I could read a million times. It speaks so much to the heart of that relationship. <3

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I am lacking the link, but did you read that gen fic where Dean IS Michael? When SPN got around to Dean being Michael's vessel in particular, I was kind of loling at it. I'll hunt down the link for you if you haven't read it, but it is seriously, seriously awesome gen fic of win.

(Yeah, I get that. I have other projects/interests, but I am going to finish This One Spn Fic I Started A Long Time Ago, hell or high water. Good thing it was AU even when S3 was on. ;)) Totally agreed. They aren't very shippable, and it's not because they've moved on or gotten more platonic or anything, they just... they're barely the same people anymore, let alone in the same relationship.

<333 Seriously. I don't care how much SPN did stuff like that, I never got sick of it, and the brothers not being all bent out of shape saving each other anymore makes me saaad.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh lord, I haven't read that and thank goodness. Don't even get me started on how horribly they've integrated Dean into the mytharc. The whole vessels thing is just full of fail on so many levels. But, I think I can count the number of gen fics I've read on one hand, lol. Especially now, when I barely read any fic at all (I used to inhale it).

Ha, I know what you mean. I have several fics that I'm going to do regardless of how dispassionate I may be, it's the principle. And, it is easier to put yourself in the past mentally while you're writing, so maybe it'll happen for us.

Agreed entirely on the boys as individuals and their relationship. The second flows from the first, and that flow has long since been disrupted. I wish I hadn't taken for granted how easy it was to slash them for so long.

the brothers not being all bent out of shape saving each other anymore makes me saaad.

This. Even when they hate each other, they should still be in the forefront of each other's minds. I NEVER would've thought I'd see such a lack of caring from the two of them towards each other as I have at various points in S4/5. Sad is right. :(((

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
:(((( It has been... kind of a mess. Every single aspect of Sam being "tempted" is such a disappointment, because it's not really temptation to the darkside at all, it's just ~convincing that the dark side is the better option~ and baaaaah DNW. :( I still inhale fic, there's just less SPN fic mixed in there than there used to be. D:;

Yeah. I am currently working on other big projects where I'm actually getting shit done in other fandoms, so I want to do those for now. XD

DDDDD: Seriously. And it wouldn't be a problem if they would, you know, deal with it right and own up to it, but instead it's like NO THIS IS HOW IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN, THERE IS NOTHING GLARINGLY WRONG AND NONSENSICLE ABOUT HOW THIS HAS GONE, NOPE. Bah, SPN. Bah. :(
