The incident just proved to me that when a lot of people say we need to talk about intersectionality more what they actually mean is 'we need to center my specific form of oppression' because they're not actually interested in having to consider intersectionality for any other groups. I don't like using the term 'Oppression Olympics' but hoo boy were a lot of people trying to argue that because their -ism is more deserving of the gold medal they don't have to consider the other equally oppressed side.

Ten seconds after the word "intersectionality" entered the mainstream, it became "If you're white, your marginalized status doesn't really affect you enough to count." White marginalized people leaned into it too, constantly apologizing for talking about the difficulties they face, they're white after all so they'll never really know true oppression and they are so so sorry for being selfish enough to even talk about themselves at all.

Pointing out one's checklist is shorter than that of someone who falls into more than one marginalized group isn't the same as saying as your marginalized status doesn't count. It's just saying you have some degree of privilege over your less privileged counterparts and should be aware of it.

I can't speak on those white people apologizing for being white. It sounds like something they need to unpack in a support group or possibly therapy.
