Most selfshippers don't think the character is real or anything, it's effectively self-indulgent roleplay.

Though there are selfshippers that believe in things like the character meeting them in the afterlife, most are chill—it isn't inherently any more indicative of being mentally unwell than being really into a fanon canon x canon pairing.


It's the level of priority it takes in one's life that can make it unhealthy, which can just as easily happen with a canon x canon ship, yet selfshippers as a group are the ones singled out for being "unwell", in spite of not doing half the awful things canon x canon shippers do over ships.
