What are some things you don't like but don't get the hate for?

What are some things where you consider it a red flag if other people wholeheartedly hate them?

Characters, canons, genres, actors, music, hobbies, all fair game

The Last Jedi.

Was it a great movie? No. But I don't think any of the newer Star Wars movies were particularly good, and TLJ didn't stand out to me.

Wait, so this is answering "dont get the hate" part right?

Yep.

I'm not a fan of most of the romantasy books out there because for me I just don't find them fun, but the peal clutching hate is overblown and rooted in purity culture misogyny. Oh no, women reading... SMUT. God forbid.

I'm not calling them good by any metric and they aren't above criticism, but that criticism quickly becomes about them being smutty, and women having the nerve to enjoy that, rather than anything else.

Hate to be that person, but Taylor Swift. I am pretty neutral, I like some songs but the genre in general isntfor me. But I do not understand the rabid hate she gets.

I mean...I do actually understand it academically but I don't get people being blinded by irrational emotion like that.

I'm meh on a lot of 13's run. I love her, but only a few of the episodes were good, and overall there was a lot of issues. but I don't get the level of hate for her.

I don't like romance as a genre at all. But people who have huge levels of loathing and act like it is vapid in ways that other things aren't. There is so much fantasy, scifi, and action that has the same lack of depth. That isn't a bad thing, pure fun has value on its own. I find fantasy and scifi fun. Others find romance fun. Nothing wrong with that.

Honestly, *most* things I don't like I don't get the hate for. Even the things I hate, most of them are not a truly big deal-- like, I might hate a certain ship, and if that ship is my friend's OTP, I don't think they have bad taste, let alone a moral deficiency, I just think it's great that they can enjoy something that sets me off as long as they have other people to share it with. I try not to make things I hate into my entire personality. While I'm capable of going off on a good rant about something when it comes up, I find it VERY easy to not think about those things unless someone is actively reminding me of them.

I don't think it's a red flag if you *personally* hate pineapple on pizza-- my sister hates pineapple on pizza, I can't eat her favorite pizza topping either, we just don't eat the same pizza. But there is a level of 'hates pineapple on pizza' that like, yeah, I consider it a red flag. Sometimes in part because it feels more performative than based in genuine personal taste in a way that hating pepperoni or mushroom does not, but mostly because I find people who make a Big Deal about how horrible pineapple on pizza is and how it shouldn't exist... well, if they can't respect that I might enjoy a pizza topping they don't, I don't trust them to respect any OTHER difference in opinion. If you can't handle the fact that pineapple on pizza is my favorite, at BEST you'll also be a dick if our tastes in movies or our favorite pets don't align, and I certainly don't trust you to respect any deep personal beliefs or *experiences* I might have that don't align with your own.

Yes. Like, I get strongly disliking things. I don't get the trend of people who think things they hate shouldn't exist and that no one else can possibly like them. The level of vitriol is scary. Strong hate existed before, but I don't remember it being this prevalent or overpowering fandoms as much.

It's a red flag if someone hates cats.

Yes. People disliking, sure. people being afraid of because they've had bad experiences, sure. But hate? That is definitely a red flag. Same with dogs.

dislikes/afraid of because of bad experiences i understand.

But people who call them evil and enjoy hurting them level of hate, yeah I agree.

Definitely. And hating dogs, too. I don't like dogs due to a bad childhood experience, but I want them to be happy and healthy, just not near me! But hating cats seems to be borderline acceptable to some people.

Also anyone who claims cats aren't affectionate.

Get treated for Toxoplasmosis, and I bet you won't feel the same.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-17 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have toxoplasmosis, but thanks for waiving around that red flag.

Ehh, I don't think there is one personally? Like it's more about how someone hates something more than the fact they hate it for me. Even with the 'wholeheartedly' cavat, since people can completely despise something but not let it rule their life, while others will make it their life's mission to ruin something that vaguely annoys them, which is much more of a red flag to me.

Most things that antis hate. Age gap ships, incest, weird kinks (I don't even like most tame kinks), panty shots and stuff like that in anime. I'm not going to consume media centered around those things but if they crop up in canon it's just a mild discomfort I can ignore if I mostly like the story. For fanfic, I don't like don't read, it's not hard.

The furry comm/fandom.

Never interested me. Getting glimpses of it, it doesn't interest me that some in the comm have breeds or cat/dog/other furry animal that come with specific traits and personalities (fursonalities, if you will).
But I've never found furries scary or "weird to the point it bothers me".

I actually find people who have really strong dislike of furries or as only an easy punching bag to be the real weirdos to be cautious of.

If someone is constantly critical/hateful of every single fictional lady and/or non-white character over stuff they will literally laud white male characters over then that's a massive red flag for me.

Having one or a few characters of the latter that someone doesn't like? Sure, they might hit a character archetype that person hates. More than fair. But if someone is only ever having a problem with women or non-white characters? Yeaaaaaah, it always ends up with that person being a raging bigot who then starts throwing slurs around.
