I find it so frustrating when a film or show wants us to think an absolutely awful character is actually an amazing character we should love. It is worse on tv shows that last a long time. Currently rewatching Grey's Anatomy and remembering how much I hate Richard Webber.

For what it's worth, I agree. I feel exactly the same way about my current NOTC, and the more canon and his extremely vocal fans try to insist he's wonderful, the more I loathe him.

Preach.

It's also a little baffling to me that the writers don't even try to walk back or explain some of the character's awful actions, or hell, even just have the character apologize or feel bad about them. It makes me wonder if they see those things as flaws that should be overlooked or just accepted, or if they don't really think some of those things are wrong in context.

One of the few times I'll agree that someone's writing actually says something about them. You write about incest romantically? Sure, whatever. You write about murder as the solution? Sounds great. You write an absolute asshole and have the narrative and everyone in the story acting like they're the most humble and long suffering saint? Methinks you're an asshole in real life.
