Agreed.

I think it's a mix of the fourth wall/promotions catering to fandoms and cons, and Twitter and Tumblr and the lack of smaller communities. It all seemed to happen around the same time. But I feel like the message boards and the LJ groups or mailrings created a smaller private community where you could build actual friendships and the drama was more contained. Now everything is massive and out there and moves so fast.
