.... sure it is? Especially since a lot of people project onto characters. Like, what's the difference between taking a canon character you strongly identify with and having that character do exactly what you would do - and basically just changing the name to your name. They're both fantasies, no one thinks that they're actually dating Barbie. Let's just wipe off that veneer and be truthful. It's a lot closer than you apparently would like to think...

And everyone pretty much universally agrees that's a bad thing BECAUSE it blurs the IC/OOC lines. People dunk on fic writers who do that all the time.
