My parents read the first few books before I did because I was too busy with school at the time to read much. They're both intelligent, well-read people. They usually ended up reading me approved Good Children's Literature as bedtime stories when I was younger. Hearing their discussions at dinner about the Harry Potter books was what made me want to read them as soon as I got the chance.

They did not, I'm very sure, ever claim they were great literature or even the best children's books ever. That didn't make them incapable of enjoying the books a whole lot. So it wasn't just kids and that's fine. They had universal appeal.

I understand that, I had teachers who were Harry Potter fans. But it still stands most people who still like Harry Potter despite their negative feelings towards JKR grew up with it. Just like how I feel about various childhood media that "imprinted" on me.
