I thought Kindles were e-readers? I mean they seem to work about the same as Kobo and Pocketbook e-readers as far as I can tell.

I don't think all are necessarily e-readers. Mine is more i-Pad like, with a large color screen, can download most apps, and no light e-ink/matte texture.

I bought it mostly to read digital comics on.

Yep. Kindle has the E-readers and the Kindle Fire, which is the tablet.

You're right, yours is more of a tablet vs an e-ink reader. I think they made it confusing when they called those a Kindle as well. It used to be Kindle = e-ink reader.
