Same, it is super annoying. Especially when those are the cheapest options.

What are some of the worst movies you've seen recently?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I watched Trap House on netflix and it might be the worst movie I've seen all year.

What are you reading?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Books, fanfic....manifestos? Manuals?

Outside of work, currently rereading the Thrawn trilogy. Still on Heir to the Empire.

And even if they don't change the artwork, it's mostly covered by a "Now A Hit Movie!!!" sticker. Haha, actually no, it's printed and you can't remove it.

I just realized how long it has been since I've watched a movie that I haven't already seen. Been a good long while. I'm hopeful about a bunch of movies this year though. I hope none of them let me down.

Based on 4

What are some of the least interesting or most disappointing villains in media?

Inspired by #7... favorite stereotypical American characters in non-U.S. media

What are stereotypical American characters in non-U.S. media you liked or found entertaining?

When I saw Secret #7 I immediately thought of Mr. K. from Gravitation, who's obsessed with firearms and explosives despite his job as a... boy band manager.

Dishonorable mention to Bandit Keith from Yugioh.

The Paleontologist by Luke Dumas and Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. Reading a couple of long fanfics as well.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I'm reading the book, why do they need to plaster the movie all over it??

Mr. Satan from DBZ. I don't think he is explicitly American but he is definitely American coded. xD

Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat.

Brigands & Breadknives

By Travis Baldree. The latest in the Legends & Lattes verse. I adored the other two books but I am struggling with this one.

The TV version of Negan sucked. Was not a fan at all. Ultron was disappointing compared to the trailers of him.

Agreed, TBH. It's one thing if the person in question has an established pattern of behavior re: doing bad things, but if someone is digging through stuff looking for like, a single questionable thing they said 15 years ago... why? Genuinely, who even cares?

I mostly gave up on Star Wars after the prequels, but I have some peripheral awareness of it past that because of fandom osmosis. I did read the Thrawn trilogy once upon a time and I liked Mara Jade, but since I'm not into the current Star Wars, I have no horse in this particular race. I have to ask, though, what in the name of creativity are you talking about? As if there isn't a way to put a character in this sprawling canon. They might have to adjust the backstory, but it seems like it would be easy enough to place someone in and around canon events. Though they wouldn't necessarily do it well, it can be done. Or they could just retcon some things, like they've done before and will again, I'm sure. I do agree that it likely wouldn't 'save' anything.

Omg, I love Gangsta! Delico my beloved.

I can't see the secret because purple NOT AVAILABLE IN YOUR REGION so thank you to the transcriber.

I could not agree more! It's one of the few things I hate about my Kindle; it'll update the covers of stuff without asking me. I really hate it a lot, I never ever want a movie or TV show tie-in cover. Like you said, it's much worse if it's a cover that doesn't accurately reflect the text. But even if the characters look "right" I still don't like it.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, generally. If it's someone who has recently been doing something crappy, then sure, name and shame. But if you comb through their social media and find something from a decade ago that's somewhat questionable, and want to go on a crusade against them when they haven't done or said anything since, that's silly.

I remember someone on a reality TV show who had some tweets using "gay" as an insult when she was a literal teenager. A 14/15 year old. And people tried to drag her for it when it had been a decade. THAT was just silly.

I wouldn't mind having a cheap paperback copy of my favorite book with the tv show cover for annotation and/or lending purposes but I'm not buying said copy when I have... uh, two nice copies? Or, one REALLY nice copy and one copy that was nice but is kind of ruined.

The Paleontologist is SO good.

Re: Inspired by #7... favorite stereotypical American characters in non-U.S. media

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I mean I did think of Bandit Keith first, but I'll second Johnny Cage.

Unfortunately my real favorite is an inside joke rather than a character actually being like this... but back when my sister was playing RE4, we did at some point dub Leon 'Johnny Amerigun', a man incapable of stealth whose favorite hobby is fishing by firing his shotgun or lobbing grenades into the nearest body of water.

lmaooo I have a (quite good) scholarly biography of Mary Queen of Scots that for some reason has a photo of the actresses from that movie that came out a few years ago on its cover. The movie was hilariously inaccurate, so if the idea was that the screenwriters referenced this biography they sure didn't take into account what it said
