I love the EU. But Mara Jade would not work in canon. She was a cool character for one version of Star Wars. But all the talk of how she could save Star Wars is just ludicrous. She doesn't fit in canon, even if we ignore the sequels. The EU shifted Jedi lore in a lot of ways that never happened in canon. People need to get over it.

I honestly don't get the Mara Jade hype. I read the Thrawn trilogy, but her rep preceded her so I was expecting some awesome character and like... that's it? I tried the Hand of Thrawn but DNF'd because it wasn't grabbing me.

Same with Dr Aphra. That's it?

I mostly gave up on Star Wars after the prequels, but I have some peripheral awareness of it past that because of fandom osmosis. I did read the Thrawn trilogy once upon a time and I liked Mara Jade, but since I'm not into the current Star Wars, I have no horse in this particular race. I have to ask, though, what in the name of creativity are you talking about? As if there isn't a way to put a character in this sprawling canon. They might have to adjust the backstory, but it seems like it would be easy enough to place someone in and around canon events. Though they wouldn't necessarily do it well, it can be done. Or they could just retcon some things, like they've done before and will again, I'm sure. I do agree that it likely wouldn't 'save' anything.

With the way Star Wars has gone, I think anything at all could fit in canon.
