Mara Jade was an interesting concept in the sense that she could be a femme fatale that was on close personal terms with the Emperor and that she remained loyal to him or something. But the old EU really flubbed it because she was a redheaded waifu and the writers all projected themselves onto Luke Skywalker. Mara became a stand in for them so they married her off to him as quickly as possible, which ended up destroying a lot of the minor character work that had been done for her in the background to a few other books. Initially she was set to be in Lando's orbit as a novice businesswoman who was willing to take a lot more chances than he did. But then the writers had a hard on for her and that part of her character ended up going into the trash for the sake of 00s waifuism. I don't recall her having a personality that wasn't "Luke Skywalker's sassy wife" after that.
