Now that I finally got around to playing Where Winds Meet, I'm incredibly entertained by all the same sex ship bait/subtext of several side characters. Not even counting the gay and lesbian sects. Especially considering it's a Chinese game, they did manage to be very unsubtle about a lot of things.

Thank you secret maker for this perfect image!

If it works for games the way it works for cdramas, an iota of plausible deniability seems adequate in most cases.

Yeah and especially when it's just side characters, it's not that closely scrutinised. It's mainly shows that are obviously based on BL novels that get the boot these days. Censorship has gotten pretty bad lately.

Dude, there exists those extraordinarily popular Chinese novels, some made into super popular Chinese TV shows just recently... Methinks this game might imply those things because they're sorta in right now.

Oh I know, I've been reading those novels in fantranslations for almost 10 years now, long before any of them were licensed in the west. The thing is: anti-gay censorship in China has amped up considerably in the recent years (since the 100 year CCP anniversary, to be exact) with several BL dramas that had already finished filming getting dumped into development hell never to be released and several female BL webnovel author's getting arrested and jailed for publishing unethical material (because their novels included smut). So yeah, it's actually a bit tricky to include obvious gay material in your media in China right now. Because while the government does love the money that gets made with this material, they still hate the material and try to censor it.

Well shit. Colour me both uninformed and baffled, I had no idea.
I assumed things were becoming looser, at least a tiny bit, if only because of how mainstream those books/show became. They're still on my to read list, so I'm not in the fandom, but my sister is and she usually keeps me updated on things like this.
And while I'd never call myself an expert on the inner workings of the Chinese government, I'll definitely going to look into whats been going on there. I'm more than a little putt off by how left field I found this.
