Too Short/Too Long

What shows, movie universes, or book series should have gone longer, and which ran too long?

The sheer amount of phenomenal, one season anime is too numerous to count.

And on the flipside, as much as I adore Stargate: SG1, I think 10 seasons might have been a bit much, especially since the Ori felt a little bit pointless at times.

Yup. I liked some parts of seasons 9 and 10, but I do think ending at season 8 would have been a better choice. It was a good ending.

Lost

(Anonymous) 2026-05-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Lost shouod have been a one season miniseries.

Re: Lost

(Anonymous) 2026-05-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think it should have had 2-3 seasons, so you could get the time travel part in. But there were so many storylines that were just really pointless, and so much backtracking by the showrunners. Also, they sidelined Harold Perrineau of all people, claiming it was because the child actor playing his son grew up too fast, and having fewer seasons could have dealt with that problem too!

Re: Lost

(Anonymous) 2026-05-25 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as I love the show, I agree somewhat that Lost should have been shorter. Not too sure it could have been good as only a one season miniseries.

How is Grey's Anatomy still on? I stopped watching after Christina left. But it shocks me that it is still running. Should have ended years ago.

Honestly, I think any show running that long, even a good one like Law and Order, loses quality. There needs to be a solid, clear ending. Shows that drag on lose their quality and it can retroactively ruin the earlier stuff too.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch should have ended when she graduated high school, and like I don't hate the college/work stuff, but it's nowhere near the same level of fun or quality because it reduced the core cast that made the show work: the Spellman family unit.

Stranger Things was fantastic as a one-season show, the world building was always wonky but giving it more seasons just really showcased that the showrunners had no clue what they were doing. Even if I do find Lucas/Max cute I rather it had just had one season.

For me the MCU has gone past the point of it being halfway fun any more, they should let the movies rest for a bit but they just keep throwing new ones out without half the care of the original run put into them and it shows.

Aw I have such nostalgia for Sabrina! I really loved the later seasons too, it was a really unique continuation I found, as usually shows continuously remain in highschool or something.

I agree with Stranger Things, though maybe a two season show rather than just the one. They very clearly had no clue what they were doing with the upside down and I honestly haven't even watched the latest season yet. Sucks cause the show had so much potential.

The best part of season 5 is the last 40 minutes where all the characters' fates are shown. You could just watch that and skip the rest of the season.

Game of Thrones should have been longer if they had gotten better showrunners.

Yup. To make such big character changes, they needed at least another season to make it believable.

Are there any ships that you didn't ship in the OG source but do in an adaptation?

Or ones that you did ship in the OG source but don't in an adaptation?

A few things in the Tolkien adaptions. I don't really ships Sam and Frodo in the books. The relationship feels less equal there. I still love their relationship, but it is strictly friendship for me in the books.

Also Thorin/Bilbo is a thing I only ship in the Hobbit movies. I don't ship that actively anymore, but I still do like it.

On the other hand, there is this crack version of Sauron/Galadriel I like. But I do not in any way ship their characters in Rings of Power. Has become a NOTP for me in fact.

Funnily enough, it's another franchise with a secret today-- I did NOT ship... well, *anything*, when I read Jurassic Park. Big fan of the DinOt3 in the movie, though I can enjoy Alan/Ellie independently of Ian. I mean, I can enjoy Alan/Ian or Ellie/Ian if I can at least believe that Alan and Ellie are also together, whether this is two thirds of a stable triad or just one set of partners in an open V.

I didn't ship anything either in the book or the movie. I get why other people ship. But Alan and Ellie are very much just close friends for me.

I've been watching a lot of Muppets lately and while I didn't like Kermit and Piggy in the OG (mainly because of Piggy), I do like them in the spin off movies and tv shows

Also the Electric Mayhem is a polycule imo (minus Animal since the Muppets Mayhem revealed he was raised by Floyd so NOPE)

I love Thorin/Bilbo in the movies but I don't ship anything in the book, and imo the book doesn't do much with their relationship at all.

I ship Legolas/Gimli more in the books than the movies as to me the movies really skimp on their dynamic, it's still shippable but man is it more so in the books.

I like Aragorn/Arwen more in the movies as she gets more of a personality than in the books.

I love so many ships in the One Piece LA, Zoro/Luffy, Sanji/Nami, Sanji/Luffy, Sanji/Usopp, Nami/Zoro. So many ships that I've never cared about in the OG.

I ship Tony/Pepper in the MCU when I don't in the comics.

Oh man. I do sort of ship movie Legolas/Gimli, but they work so much better in the book and I much prefer their book dynamic.

Agree on Thorin/Bilbo. The dynamic works better in the movies, it is a different thing, and I find them more shippable.

Re: Inspired by secret 1

(Anonymous) 2026-05-24 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I can still ship movie Legolas/Gimli because there are elements of their book relationship there, but the books is where their dynamic shines the best imo.

Oh for sure the movies went extra hard on the Thorin/Bilbo dynamic to make it even sadder when Thorin dies, and I simply thank them for it because it gave me an OTP for life, lmao.

Didn't ship anything in the original Star Trek. Ship everyone with McCoy from Star Trek AOS.

Karl Urban’s McCoy is VERY shippable.

I definitely ship Hannibal/Clarice in the books and the movies. But it's Hannibal/Will all the way with the tv show. If Bryan Fuller ever gets his way and has a fourth season with Clarice, he better not be breaking up Hannigram.
