I tell people that I've never owned a single Sega console because I preferred Nintendo.

The real reason: As an extremely sensitive child who was severely bullied by other kids (including cousins!), I hated how vicious and bullying Sega was toward Nintendo in their ads in the 80s and 90s.

I understand this. I never really vibed with bullying or mean ads.

I feel like that tone has really fallen out of fashion in the last decade or two.

Is that other people’s perception too or am I just not seeing the newer mean ads for some reason?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it has decreased a bit, but also shifted markets and angle. The modern tactic seems to be to play the victim, encouraging your existing customer base do the bullying instead.

In some fields, yes. But it has gotten worse in politics, in my opinion, at least in the US.

As a SEGA kid, I have to say I put up with a lot of bullying from the Nintendo kids too. It was fair play.

Our game system was a gift from Santa (aka my parents, who could probably afford a SEGA and not a Nintendo and I now own a Switch 2 as an adult so I can see the price difference), but the fact that they cared to give us one at all is something that I treasure more than the system itself.

...Nintendo doesn't have feelings though. The console wars were brutal, but it was just two companies competing for consumer's attention. That's capitalism for ya.

(I thought some of the ads were fun, though. Some aged really badly.)

I always hated ads like that or "choosy moms choose Jif."

why moms? are dads incapable of even making a peanut butter sandwich?

Historically speaking moms have done most of the grocery shopping, and that slogan was from the 90s.

I’m glad for you that you truly have no clue what vicious bullying is. Even jokingly calling this bullying undermines real bullying, a reprehensible behavior that kills. A 35 year old marketing campaign showing that one console has more games than another isn’t bullying and never was.

You. You are the subject of #5.

Sorry, where’s the fun secret? Is it that OP is incredibly privileged, extremely stupid, and laughably sensitive about video game console ads?

I think that a reasonable and more charitable read would be that someone who experiences something upsetting and perhaps traumatic (like bullying) might be especially sensitive to things that are a reminder of their painful experiences.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I could see that if OP hadn’t used vicious to describe the ad. It calls into question if they were really bullied or just overly sensitive and prone to exaggeration, which is how the secret reads.

Same, this comes off more as a kid being burnt out from being reminded of mean-spirited behavior in others, versus actually anthropomorphizing a corporation.

What is it with people here and making up the worst possible interpretation of the OPs here anyway?

Eh, I think this is a huge jump and assuming things not specificed. I saw interpreted this secret as OP being overly sensitive (as they say), not privileged. And this is from someone who dealt with "actual" vicious bullying growing up. I had to become homeschooled because I dealt with physical abuse and sexual harassment. Like, OP needs to get a grip, but you should probably not jump the gun either.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-27 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
Really missed the point there, dude.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-27 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
... what's "vicious" about that ad? It's just pointing out that the Genesis has more games available for it than the SNES, which I assume was the truth at the time.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I hate to think of how OP would have reacted to the old Watkins Coffee ads. (Jim Henson, folks!)

(Anonymous) 2026-05-27 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I never noticed the ads back then, but now as an adult, I just see teasing and ribbing, just like rivals would do. But from the perspective of a very bullied child, who might be more sensitive to hearing negative and even insulting language, I could see how it might be taken as bullying.

That said, I was really curious about the ads from back then, so I went to the Internet Archive. https://archive.org/details/sega-us-hardware-ads_202310/mode/2up

Pages 43-59: multiple ads with the text "GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDON'T" followed by random jabs at Nintendo for Sega CD. (Plus a couple of risqué ads not related to Nintendo.)

I have to admit I am amused. It's also funny because Sega thought they were unbeatable, and now we have Nintendo, Sony and for while Xbox running games that Sega could only dream of. I can't even remember the last time I saw a Sega system... Dreamcast, probably?

I can't say I remember these ads, but I do remember a SEGA baby doll ad that freaked me the fuck out. You can watch it if you want (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-r9SPKiv2o), but I do not recommend.

I do remember there were some political mudslinging ads of around that era that I thought were bad enough that they should have gotten someone sued.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-27 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I never saw those ads because in my country, ads that intentionally badmouth a specific rival company are prohibited.
