Yeah, I'm really thankful my actual periods aren't so bad. They're just short and heavy. Years ago I used to feel energized *during* my period, I once walked a few miles on foot just because I could. I often feel great. But PMS has gotten so bad that the relief of actual bleeding isn't worth it anymore. I just want it gone so I can live my life and make a living.

PMS and period pain is downplayed and it's so disgusting. My sister is almost a decade younger than me but she was screamed at and told to "get over it" when PMDD gave her borderline psychosis. It really isn't normal to become borderline disabled every month.

AYRT Yes, my mother was a nurse and when I was complaining that wearing two maxi pads wasn't enough for an hour on the bus in the morning, she decided that I was lying and not changing pads often enough, so she bought me plastic incontinence pants and made me wear them. Whenever I was in serious pain, I was obviously just trying to avoid school (I loved school! I never skipped a single class!) I got a diagnosis of PCOS at 25 when it had got so bad that I was fainting from pain and things got better from there.

Oof :( I wasn't diagnosed with PCOS until I was 29. Unfortunately my PCP back then was terrible and just wanted to put me on spirolactone (my testosterone levels are in an AFAB range and not high). I was seeing her to lose weight, ironically, and despite PCOS impacting my weight I was just told to eat less. Few people really seem to care or want to understand. I'm terrified of talking to my manager about missing work so much this month, work is my #1 priority and PMS impacting that drives me crazy.

Missing work due to poor health is something you can present as a problem that you are now fixing. Instead of a straight up apology go with "I feel really bad about missing [days] due to a health problem. I've seen the doctor about it and I'm now on medication which will hopefully start working in the next few weeks." Acknowledge the problem and propose the answer instead of letting your manager assume that this is just how you are.

Also, have you seen the new research and diagnostic terms for PCOS?

That's true. Another thing is I have perfect attendance, I tend to miss one day of work a month. 40hr weeks wear me out during PMS fatigue, but I try to bounce back after a day of rest. I feel like a drama queen for freaking out over missing two days, but I've been struggling so much this week. The best apology is a changed behavior... and I'm trying my best to avoid attendance strikes, even if you can get an exemption if it's for medical reasons. I'm just out of PTO hours and I'm so upset.

I had a family member tell me about the nane change for PCOS. I think it's interesting, but I still use the old term since it's what most people are familiar with.
