I'm really, really bad at celebrity meet amd greets. I never know what to say or do, how to act cool, how to pose if there are pictures. I'm always an awkward mess. ๐Ÿ˜ž

I've been to a couple of book signings and I still cringe at the memories.

I've had a celebrity pic with Barrowman and though he's game for most things, I did not grab his butt.

if you're really nervous, try to watch the few people ahead of you in line to see how the person interacts with everyone. basically, binge their expression and mannerisms so you know what to do when they look you in the eye next. also, rehearse some generic phrases in your head. "thanks for your work" "I loved you in X" "I liked how you handled Y character" and even moreso if they're booked to the con because of New Popular Show but you've been a fan since Old Movie Nobody Watched. they like hearing that people really like their other work instead of the 530th person today to gush about Star Wars.

other than that, just take a breath. don't worry about outdoing all the weirdos who are paying hundreds of dollars for a photo they can post online to try to outdo everyone else (see selected Barrowman photo, yikes on bikes). I've been going to cons and talking to celebs for over 35 years, I can guarantee so much of it is forgettable, you won't even look at that pic again unless it's your single once in a lifetime wow worth cherishing. there are people dumping thousands of dollars every year to collect 'em all like Pokemon, and I know they never look at those pics again. choose what's valuable to you and focus on that, outdoing the other fans will cost too much for zero payoff.

I think the key is to just have... not low expectations, but like modest expectations? Like the goal is just to get an acceptable photo with them and have one simple thing to tell or ask them, no need to worry about being cool or interesting or special.

Good god, I cannot stand John Barrowman. Seeing this secret was like getting jump scared but instead of fear it's just immense dislike.

Oh good itโ€™s not just me! The whole pic is really disturbing to me knowing what heโ€™s like.

Oh, no, never just you. You know the "if X has one hundred haters" meme? It's me, I'm the hater. If John Barrowman has no haters it's because I'm dead.

Oh no, dare I ask what the "knowing what he's like" bit is about? I find the pic super cringe in general.

Is that who this is? I didn't recognize him.

Yeah, hard agree. Big reason why I largely stopped doing these outside of conventions becoming a huge money pit. The photo ops felt super cringe after a while imho. They rush you through them, especially if it's a headlining guest, and it becomes hella awkward.

tbf tho', some are very friendly and patient: I had a really good experience with Sean Gunn at a convention about a decade ago. The first photo I'd gotten with him (on a Friday, which is typically a lot slower) at his table turned out terribly, so I went back the next day, all set to pay for another table photo op. When I jokingly explained why, he was like "Nah, save your money, let's retake it!" and not to tell his handlers ahahaha. I think it was because I had drawn a picture of Kraglin (from Guardians of the Galaxy) for him to autograph and he really liked it lmao.

I just thank them for their hard work, don't make eye contact, and avoid taking pictures with them because I also don't know how to pose.

I'm too anxious to do meet and greets ='D

The most I can do is listen to others' experiences and be happy for them when I hear the good interactions.
