(Anonymous) 2026-06-06 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)but I will amend it to: I don't think minor AI use is several orders of magnitude more ethically wrong than plenty of other unethical systems that most people in the western world participate in without caring or thinking about it. I know AI data centers are ruining towns in america, but I don't know anything about the communities ruined by lithium mining in other countries to create all the electronics I'm using to complain about AI on, you know? so the internet shaming backlash against AI use (rather than against the CEOs pushing these things, hell for them forever) does feel a little hypocritical and myopic and puritan-contamination-mindset, fearmongering adjacent even though there are very much real problems, rather than a really considered comparison of the consequences
but it's still super sad for someone to be defensive over letting the Lazy Lies Chewed Up Human Thought Into Half Digested Pap Regurgitation Machine become one of their big sources of joy.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-06 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)But you also have to look at the output. Lithium is the basis for a lot of technology that our society no longer functions without, so it is impossible to opt out of such an ethical failure and stay alive.
It is, on the other hand, more than possible to not use AI and stay alive. Especially if you're only using it for entertainment, when there is, on the internet, millions if not billions of options for entertainment and joy.
What OP is basically saying is that they should be able to destroy a town to have a specific kind of fun for five minutes that they don't need to have and have almost an infinite number of other options for and they're mad that other people don't agree.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-06 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)but let's not pretend that one nerd making shitty chatgpt slash salad is what's driving the AI boom. if OP and even everyone else like them stopped tomorrow, the tech bros would keep right on trying to shove AI into every digital process
and meanwhile it's not like I'm using my personal electronics to save lives, I use it for convenience and fun and to watch porn. and it's not just lithium, it's everything. I'm not a vegan because I love cheese and bacon. some people have medical needs for animal protein, but I'm not one. factory farming is both torture AND a major contributor to climate change, but I'm part of that system anyway. not because I need it to live but because i just don't want to eat that much beans.
idk I just think that pretending AI use is uniquely evil leads directly to people like OP feeling persecuted and people who are exposed to the few positive use cases for AI (like protein folding) feeling like the rage is overblown fearmongering, which actually undercuts the many legitimate issues

(Anonymous) 2026-06-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)The fact that the majority of the time you also use personal devices for entertainment doesn't also mean you don't need them to live. Try to get a job from scratch with no phone, computer, internet, etc etc. Try to pay a bill. etc. There is no other option. People cannot afford to not buy meat from factory farms, either because they're not paid enough or they live in a food desert; there doesn't need to be a medical reason for it to be necessary to have it. There is no other option. There are tons of reasons people need these harmful things and it is this reason we say there is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
BUT
The only unique thing about genAI is that it has absolutely no unique use at all. Everything it can do, a human can do and do better. It's a bubble that will crash and the only question is how many lives must be destroyed before that happens. By continuing to prop it up by playing with it is directly contributing to those lives being destroyed just to speculate on the possibility of enriching people who already have enough.
Protein folding is not genAI. It's not what OP is using to get a character porn image. This inability to distinguish scientific pattern recognition programs and generative large modeling is being used by the techbros to try and prop up their bullshit because they know the average person cannot and/or will not care to make that distinction.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-07 03:18 am (UTC)(link)and there are so many fucking old people CEOs that are stuffing this into their company's workflows because they think it's The Future. my bosses keep mentioning that I could totally use AI to brainstorm ideas or summaries as if I haven't been doing this job for years and am very competent at Thinking Of Things. So many people with no friends are having their loneliness hijacked by sycophancy and reordering their entire emotional worlds around AI. SO many grifters are using it to pump out industrial volumes of slop channels, the equivalent of 5 Minute Crafts on steroids to fund weird criminal enterprises. That's where the usage statistics is coming from. I have not seen any compelling evidence that fandom usage is a meaningful slice of that pie
and every time you say "there simply is no other option", you're fucking lying. there ARE other options to those things. they're just a lot HARDER. they would require some personal sacrifice, sometimes serious ones, in effort and pleasure and time. Just like learning to write and make art or hunting down things you like in small fandoms or building relationships and hyping up people who make the things you like are all HARD.
anyway, I hope OP stops, because AI is shitty and it's products are shitty and I hope everybody who feels so isolated that they turn to the Echo Machine to find the courage to search for something else even if it's harder. but I think treating AI like it's qualitatively different (rather than quantitatively different) from so many other shitty shortcuts with far-away serious consequences is a little bit disingenuous at best and at worst an excuse for righteous outrage internet crusades against people who have no power but are easier to yell at than the real problem. which the internet does in fact love to do
