Mildly perplexed by why 'if this show weren't as good at characterising a good number of its characters as it is I wouldn't like it as much' needs to be a secret (I think 'if this show were worse I wouldn't like it as much' is a point of view shared by most people), but the ladies of Avatar are indeed awesome and I feel compelled to give a thumbs-up to anything mentioning that.

Well, some shows have loads of well-developed and interesting characters who unfortunately are all male. With the exception of Katara and maybe Suki, the roles played by the awesome girls of Avatar could either have been filled by male characters or simply written around. Hell, Toph and Azula originally were going to boys, and Ty Lee and Mai weren't going to exist at all. I know I wouldn't love Avatar nearly as much as I do if that plan had gone through, and presumably the OP wouldn't either. But when you say that out loud, you usually get people saying, "I'm interested in the characters' personalities, not their genitalia! Way to be close-minded and reverse-sexist!"

While the sentiment behind this idea is a good one, the problem is it doesn't recognise that personalities are somewhat shaped by experiences and different genders can (and usually do) have very different experiences growing up.

It's more of a I love X character, regardless of their genitals!

No, I definitely agree! But some people evidently do not, as I have seen discussions where people are accused of sexism for demanding strong female characters in their fiction. Sort of like how people who point out racism are accused of racism, because "if you see this as oppression, it's your fault for not being colorblind like I am!"

Anyway, that's why I imagine the OP would want to keep this a secret.

Responding to the issue as a whole:

Being blind to gender/sex is great when enjoying characters, but lately I find myself disinclined to read fiction when I know beforehand that female characters take a back seat. I'm already in so many of those fandoms, where there are maybe four female characters, and they're all dead, wussy, or what-have-you. I'm not going to lie: I can't enjoy something nearly as much if there aren't strong female characters in it.

I'd kill for more well-written women in my fiction. I love the boys, but they need to sit in the back and let the girls have a turn sometimes.

Judo, are you reading/watching Fairy Tail? It's shounen fantasy/adventure, which I think you're into because I know you watch Naruto? Half the cast is female, and the girls get just as much development and action as the guys do. I picked it up because I was promised kick-ass women, and I was definitely not disappointed. Erza Scarlet alone is worth everything that annoys me about the shounen action genre.

You are correct. I love that genre, even though I bitch about its frequent misogyny, too much fighting too little character development, blah blah, I still get into shounen series ALL THE TIME. Yeah, I don't know either. Willful masochism, yea?

Man, I will so hop on that shit. Maybe if I read more series with women I will be able to go back and read the ones without, which I hear are very good, but I just cannot force myself to because hnnng I am sick of not having any female characters, fodrammit.
