VLD exacerbated it and Covid made it go nuclear. Now fandoms grow way too fast and start eating themselves just as quickly. Combined with the weird conservative stances gen z seem to exhibit, it is all a shitshow.

I actually hadn't considered the impact of covid, because antishipping got popular in my fandom circles in the mid 2010s. You're right that things got even weirder then.
