You're not alone. Roald Dahl's books, despite finding them in the YA or children's section of the bookstore, are NOT for children! :)

What in the hell are you talking about? I fucking LOVE Roald Dahl, along with scary and violent stories. All I was saying was that his writing found in the children's section has never struck me as traditional children's book writing.

Fair enough, but your last post sounded like you were saying kids shouldn't be allowed to read his books... if that's not how you meant it, cool. Sorry for jumping on you.

Honestly, though, I never found them that unusual (apart from unusually good) as far as children's stuff goes. Like, if you look at old fairy tales, there's some incredible nightmare fuel in there... I think the idea that scary = not for children is a pretty recent one.

Oh jeeze, not at all! I mean, aside from The Witches, my other favorite reading material from when I was little was Alvin Schwartz' collection of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Now THAT is some creepy shit.

I dunno though, they always struck me as being far from the educational and moralistic stuff that is fed to kids today. You're right though, the scary = not for children idea IS a more recent one (especially in lovely censored, overprotective America)... so my first comment was stemming from that. For our society, it seems as though kids are constantly subjected to incredibly stupid reading material like "Captain Underpants"... which I would NEVER let my future kids read, but would gladly give them Roald Dahl.
