What I didn't like in the first book, as a kid, was that there didn't seem to be any character who was clearly on Alice's side, so to speak. Everyone seemed to constantly lecture her and put her down or and were just generally either indifferent or faintly hostile or just (in the case of the Duchess) unpleasant people in general. However, I eventually convinced myself that maybe the Cheshire cat actually liked her and was an ally of sorts, if not very steadfast. This made me like the whole book more - I already loved the whimsy, anyway.
Through the Looking-Glass was just way too cool not to like. The shifting between many scenes were more convincingly dreamlike than the first book; the chessboard structure and plotting was so lovely and the interplay between the characters was wonderful. The "Shaking-Waking" bit at the end, going from shaking the Red Queen to shaking the black kitten? Brilliant, especially with Tenniel's helpful drawing. Plus that whole thing with the sleeping Red King was just so neat.
