[Across The Universe]

[identity profile] umbreons.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They are so not better than the originals (especially ERW's covers.. *shudder*).

But Joe Anderson's cover of Happiness is a Warm Gun is absolutely fucking incredible. Probably the most underrated song in the movie, too, which totally sucks.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I whole heartedly agree.

<3 Thank you.

I've often preferred cover versions to the original Beatles tracks (especially Across the Universe - Fiona Apple's version can make me cry sometimes). So I agree with you, and know the concept of having to hide from a Beatles-crazy flist.

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP. Probably because I grew up in a house where my dad never had me listen to the Beatles as a child and so I grew up without ever knowing they were supposed to be awesome.

But yeah, I prefer the movie-versions of the songs.

[identity profile] lumati.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...I like the covers too. Hey Jude especially stuck me as being rather beautiful.

[identity profile] timid--timbuktu.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "Helter Skelter" is the only one i found...not better necessarily, but interesting at all. Most of the rest was just bland straight up covers. And I'm not even a big Beatles fan, so it's not super!loyalty that makes me feel this way. I just think if you;re going to do a cover it has to be vastly different from the original AND good, for me to care.

Not all, but definitely Helter Skelter. Oh yesss.

[identity profile] aldehyde.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
i think the covers are good, but nothing beats the originals for me.

[identity profile] pwnmastersaurus.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm split on the songs... some I prefer the covers, some the originals, but I do think I lean towards the covers more. And yes, Dana Fuchs is an otherworldly being sent to bless us with her voice. Mmmmmmm <3

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree somewhat. I loved when they did really different things with them, like I Wanna Hold Your Hand, With a Little Help From My Friends, Let It Be, and Blackbird (those were my favorites). I also really liked All You Need is Love, even though objectively it wasn't amazing.

Dana Fuchs' version of Helter Skelter blew me away. She's indeed awesome (and I hope to see her live some day).

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'd never say they're better than the originals, but a whole lot of them were amazing. and I'd pretty much kill to grow up to be just like Dana Fuchs.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-26 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I watched Across the Universe a few days ago with some friends. We turned it off in the middle, everyone was so pissed off.

[identity profile] steph313.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I forced myself to sit through the whole thing even though I SO BADLY wanted to turn that garbage off. I felt it important to be in the "I can at least claim I hate it because I've seen it and suffered through it" camp.

But damn, was that movie atrociously bad.

[identity profile] scarletumbrella.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought every single one of the covers were a billion times WORSE than the originals. Except for Dana Fuchs' version of "Helter Skelter," which I love.

I wouldn't say that they're better than the originals, but they have an entirely different mood for me. I listen to the ATU covers like a musical or an opera CD--straight through, usually. If I want the Beatles, I put all my Beatles music on shuffle and sing along to random songs until I lose my voice completely. ;)

I will say that I think the ATU version of "Girl" fits the lyrics better than the original.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
IA, honestly. I mean, I adore the Beatles, but they're not known for their amazing, epic singing voices. Dana Fuchs is a fucking BADASS and I'm so in love with Joe Anderson that I could just DIE and...yeah, they all have great voices, and some of those songs sounded esp. good in a female voice. So, yeah. :P

[identity profile] plural-force.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason I would disagree about the covers being better is because I grew up listening to the Beatles constantly-- so, to each their own, really. A lot of the cover versions were quite good. I, for one, absolutely loved AtU's version of "Girl."

...And now I'm curious about what your two exceptions were.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2009-12-26 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
My two exceptions were Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite and All You Need Is Love.

The first because it was just way too campy, like beyond the pale of campy.

and the second because I just didn't like how it was sung.
