Well, you bring up two issues here.

As far as the show itself goes, I feel like Whedon is talking out of both sides of his head. "Isn't rape AWFUL?" he is obviously trying to say. But then it's presented as cool- look! Eliza can ride a motorcycle and solve crimes and have sex with a man who is still in love with his dead wife! Are you still grossed out? Hunh? Hunh? How bout now? And yes, I understand that might not be what YOU see when you watch Dollhouse, which is why my comment specifically said interpretations differ.

As for the larger issue, who ought to be talking about what, sure. I think it's great to have men participate in dialogues about sexism, and as a white person, it's obviously important for me to pay attention to issues about race. But the primary voices should be those who have a horse in the game. My thoughts on what the black experience is like in America is ultimately kinda pointless without you know, actual black people participating in the dialogue. Dollhouse feels like someone talking AT me, about something he will never be able to experience personally.

So, yeah. I find Whedon's narrative simplistic and condescending. Yes, Joss. We know rape is Bad. Thanks ever so for pointing that out. Right now, he is not telling a story I find new or compelling or worth my emotional investment. YMMV.

I understand where you are coming from, on the first part.

But I had to say something about stating that it's not something he could ever experience personally. Men get raped as well and that's something important to remember. Saying a man shouldn't be talking about rape because he could never experience it scares me, because its that sort of thinking that stops men coming forward about being raped.

But that's the only part of your post that got to me. YMDV on the rest, and that's all fair enough. You don't have to like the show.

I don't find it at all helpful to bring men's issues into a conversation about feminism. It derails the conversation. The fact of the matter is that women are far far far more likely to be victims of sexual violence. (If the caveat of percentage and likelihood was all you were looking for, than certainly I acknowledge the possibility of men being victims. But again, it shouldn't be the primary focus in a conversation about women's issues.)

Whedon is pretty aware of this, and it's reflected in his shows. It would be a completely different format if he explored the male Dolls being made to do things sexually they would not ordinarily do. The fact that he didn't tells me two things: One, Hollywood is in no way ready to look at male homosexuality (either consensual or forced) and two, Whedon is *trying* to tell a story about feminist issues. It's just not a story I am remotely interested in hearing.
