Ok, now I'm just CONFUSED.

In the beginning of CoE, they talk about being a couple, and they have that passionate kiss before Jack blows himself up, and when Jack finds out Gwen is pregnant, he says to Ianto "We're having a baby" like it's the three of theirs, and- sure, Jack isn't the most expressive guy on the planet, but I do not buy into the "Jack was mean to poor Ianto who loved him" theory of fandom.

I think we were supposed to understand that Jack didn't want to care about Ianto as much as he wound up doing, because he knew it had to end badly. Cause it's *always* gonna end badly for Jack, seeing as he can't ever die.

My husband never watched an ep of TW before CoE and he got that Jack/Ianto were in love. So. Some of this can be blamed on writing/acting. I guess the rest is just personal interpretation.

I just didn't see it at all. Ianto's love was obvious, but I saw nothing beyond faint lust and some fondness from Jack until Ianto was actually dying. Their relationship in series two felt so much more natural that the awkwardness in CoE just made me think they should stop whatever it was they were doing together and find people who were better for them. And then Ianto died and Jack turned into a sudden pile of angst.

Personal view and opinion, of course, but that's really how I saw it.

I have spoken to people who didn't understand why Jack was so upset when Ianto died, though.

Oh, awkwardness- yes. I did see some of that. I think it was supposed to be about them figuring out what they meant to one another- the dreaded 'couple' word, and of course, the big unspoken L word. The problem was they squished it into only four episodes, which was nowhere near enough time to deal with something like loving an immortal guy (I mean, the Dr. and Rose got SEASONS to deal) and then there was plot, and it was all too fast. But yes, yes. Awkwardness.
