I enjoyed this movie and had hoped it'd spawn a string of old school non-gory horror films in a historical setting with tons of atmosphere, very classic British stuff like M.R. James or something similar. Still disappointed that didn't happen.

I genuinely worry for people who say they couldn't believe that Hans was going to be the "twist" villain in the first Frozen movie. If you can't spot that from a mile away, what's your reading comprehension like?

I didn't see it coming on first viewing, because this was a pretty early case of Disney sneakily using and then subverting their own tropes. Hans was exactly the kind of lovely Prince a girl happens to meet and fall in love with. At worst I figured he would be a nice, understanding guy who would quietly bow out when he saw Anna was more into Kristoff. His turn was a genuine surprise in 2013.

(Also, the movie does get a lot of shit from oversaturation, but I will stand my ground on the other subversion - the act of love being Anna saving her sister and not a kiss between soul mates - being stunningly great. I still remember the first time I saw it. Anna defrosting into Elsa's arms is so cathartic and peak cinema for me.)

Not in the ‘omg other people are do dumb’ way but I definitely spotted him being the twist villain while watching it for the first time. I think if Kristoff hadn’t been in the movie it might have tricked me for longer, but because Kristoff was clearly the actual LI Hans came off as suspect at best to me quite fast. That and the movie was already playing with the ‘falling in love with the first person you meet is dumb’ concept to make it very obvious he wasn’t a good choice, and his lyrics in Love is an Open Door hinting at his ambition.

Yeah ngl I did not understand the genuine shock people had over him being a villain, it was written all over his character. What I was actually pleasantly surprised by was the act of true love being between the sisters and not Kristoff saving her, that I liked and thought worked really well in the movie. It was sweet.

I genuinely worry for people who forget that Disney movies are mainly for children, and that when a children's movie comes out in the theater it's brand new and most children go see it without fifteen years' worth of internet knowledge about tropes and their subversions.

I didn't see Hans becoming the main antagonist because I stopped thinking about him the minute Anna went on her quest.

With the passing of Hayden Panettiere, I watched a video of someone suggesting that maybe the public should stop supporting media that include characters played by real children. Especially those not being protected by their parents, or worse, the ones being exploited by their parents. Add in the pedophilia problem Hollywood evidently has... not to mention the shit some kids get for the misfortune of being in an unflattering role... look, it may sound like an extreme opinion, but I'm starting to agree.

Secrets you don't want to make...

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Monday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.
