It is equal parts heartwarming and depressing that so many of the people in Egyptology got interested in the subject because of Stargate. I will admit though, the nerds behind both the original movie and early SG1 series did a lot of research on the subject. There eater eggs in both that you wouldn't get until you start reading the subject.

If something as innocuous as a sci-fi movie can catch the interest of a person so much they want to learn more about Egyptology, that sounds downright wholesome. I've always had an interest in Ancient Egypt and don't remember where it came from. (Not Stargate.) But it was probably something I saw as a kid.

I think it's awesome if a fandom/movie/tv show/book of any kind sparks interest, passion, even a life-long hobby or job! That's a big part of what media and literature should be about, in my opinion - sparking joy, interest, and curiosity.

I got interested in Ancient Egypt because of E.Nesbit's book "The Story of the Amulet." Anything that catches people's interest in an academic subject is good.

I think the new He-Man movie was a fun movie. It was. I also think it would have been a far better movie if they hadn't worried so much about it being too goofy. It is alright to make something goofy unselfconsciously. People will still join you for a fun ride, even if you don't hang a lampshade on every goofy moment.

I don't know why Hollywood writers keep making this mistake.

Also Skeletor was fun and I wish it had been anyone else than Leto. It really could have been anyone.

See, I feel like Hollywood has the opposite problem these days. Trying to take itself too seriously. One of the reasons I loved Masters of the Universe so much is because it really didn't take itself seriously at all and just had fun with the ridiculousness.

There's someone in my fandom Discord that's obsessed with stupid expensive merch. She always announces new drops to the group, asks if people think it's worth buying, then aggressively argues with everyone when a whole bunch of people say it's definitely not. Then "jokingly" blames the group for "making" her miss out.

I have watched as they all collectively got sick of having to play Mommy and started responding neutrally. "Do what you want." "If it makes you happy." "We can't tell you how much it's worth for you." "Let us know how it goes." "You're an adult, it's your money."

She's asking for donations for bills this month and trying and failing to sell the merch everyone else used to tell her to not buy. The levels of silent schadenfreude in the room cannot be understated. I am watching the drama unfold with literal popcorn
