You should totally read the books. They're a really fast and great read. It's basically plot MONSTER BATTLE MONSTER BATTLE MONSTER BATTLE plot MONSTER BATTLE MONSTER BATTLE RELATED TO PLOT.

The series is written for kids who have ADHD, so that explains why the series is basically monster battle after monster battle after monster battle. The main characters have ADHD and dyslexia, and the pacing will give you some serious whiplash if read the books after reading something with slow pacing.

The series follows Percy (real name Perseus) Jackson. The Greek Gods are real and are still having children with mortals, creating demigods. In order to protect themselves from all the monsters out there, demigods go to Camp Half-Blood to train. Some stay for the summer, others stay year round. Percy is the son of (slight spoilers?) Poseidon, except whoops, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon agreed not to have any more kids with mortals after WWII. Then there's this whole prophecy thing concerning a child of the Big Three (as they're called) that may or may not cause the end of the world.

As a Slash fan I wondered about the shipping before the real plot took over and I thought of Grover/Percy too but since he's a (slight spoiler) satyr...No.

The kink meme does Percy/Nico pretty well or Percy/Nico/Annabeth. Well Nico is not in this movie but maybe the next one? Because he's my favourite character anyway.

BUT I'm totally okay with the canon paring in the books.

Yeah, before the trailers came out, I kind of shipped Percy/Grover, though I think I shipped Percy/Thalia and Grover/Tyson a bit more. When I found out Brandon T. Jackson was playing Grover and I saw the trailers, I began shipping it a bit more.
