Yeah, I understand that. I ship a few canon pairings as well as non-canon ones. I have to admit I'd feel pretty limited when writing fics (almost no background pairings allowed) if I shipped only canon pairings, though. It also seems to me that they are pretty fond of the show and the dynamics and might not be fond of AUs? (what with the canon only and all)

I met quite a few 'I only ship canon and I gloat about it a lot' people in my previous fandom which made me a bit wary as a result. /sigh

Oh, I know. I've met those people before too and they're terrible. I hate when "canon" becomes such a heated discussion in terms of fandom. The people that judge you for not writing canon based things. That is just ridiculous.

But in other fandoms I've disliked AUs, so I can understand wanting canon stories. And in Whedonverse I tend to only like the canon pairings, so I can understand that as well and some great canon pairing fics came out of that fandom - so I think it just depends.

See, that's what turned me off on the House fandom over the summer...this obsession with making their OTP canon on both sides of the argument. I mean, canon pairings are great, I have canon OTPS (Mulder and Scully much?) but ships don't have to be canon to be VALID. So I think we should just ship who we wanna ship and enjoy it. Some people like to stick to canon, other people, usually the more creative/imaginative types, will want to subtext. Whatever floats your boat!
