It's not boring to you! If it were you wouldn't ship them.

It is boring to me, because canon satisfies my craving for canon pairings. I turn to fandom for the things I can't get in canon.

It's really a huge "to each his own."

I would argue that just because a pairing is canon doesn't mean the source has exhausted all possibilities for that pairing.

Yeah, but limiting yourself to canon only takes away the fun of exploring possibilities with other characters. I understand that not everyone feels like this but I want my sandbox to be as big as possible when I go play in it.

But for some people navigating a giant realm of possibilities isn't fun, and the fun and challenge comes from creating new stories within the parameters set forth by source. Neither preference is better or more or less creative than the other, I don't think; they're just different.

Some people I know in my fandom really really love to try everything from every angle, and take it as a challenge when they think up some random pairing and situation as if picked out of a hat. More power to them, but that's not fun for me. I was drawn into fandom because I was drawn to the canon, and I'm mostly a slave to it. Fun for me is working within the canon (though to be fair my fandom is ridiculous with the sheer amount and contradictory nature of said canon).

The canon was what moved me in the first place to seek out the fandom and create fanworks in it. I adore the canon, and I love the challenge of working within that established universe.

I'm probably a little more lenient than it seems -- I enjoy things that aren't strictly canon (right now I'm working on a Book 6 Harry Potter story where Percy Weasley is really a secret auror and I'm trying to justify a lot of his actions in the book that we only see peripherally through that lens) but I get annoyed with fics that are like "Forget the books! Harry's really a Slytherin and he's been Snape's son all this time and everybody knows it!"

Yeah, I can get where you're coming from with that. I'm generally okay with seeing more canon pairings, but as you've said. It's all about personal tastes.
