What I mean is that compared to let's say the late 60's/early to mid 70's most of today's performers (in music at least) come across as almost timid. It's okay to shock if you are a heavy metal performer and dripping sex during a pop routine when you are barely a teen has become common, but what about the rest of the performers? Bowie, Queen, ect ect were very theatrical in their performances and actually knew something about art off stage as well AND were still very popular in their own time. When most people say they think Amanda is trying too hard/they don't get it, they normally mean she is too theatrical or they think she is trying to be theatrical. Personally, I think it comes natural to her and we need more of it to even things up a bit.

Okay, I see what you mean, although I disagree with calling it "timid". More just "non-theatrical", which there's nothing wrong with. As long as we're not looking at just Top 40 music, there's a lot of bands out there that are anything but timid in what they're doing, although it may not be theatrical.

Basically, I think that although art (very loose term there, I'm assuming we're talking mainly about music) is can be seen to be lacking some theatrical elements, it definitely isn't timid. And I think a lot of musicians don't really give a shit about the "mainstream's" attention anyway, and would rather just do their thing.

I agree, timid may not be the best word, but I mean that compared to the previous groups I mentioned, it does seem they are scared of bringing any real art into for the sake of losing the mainstream's attention.

Personally I usually care very little about the mainstream, but some of my favorite groups were very popualr in their time and still kept high standards in terms of their performances. I guess I just wish we saw more of that. Look how popular The Beatles were and continue to be and all the ground they broke.

It doesn't have to be theatrical or out there to be "real art". There are multiple ways to be an artist/musician, through both recordings and performance, and I don't think a lot of them seem "scared" to do so at all (although I'm not sure who you mean by "they"). At least looking at some bands I listen to, haha. As long as the musician in question is trying to really express something rather than make some money, I would call it art. That doesn't mean it's going to be successful or any good, but it remains art.

I agree, though, that "popular music" has really gone downhill since... I don't even know when, and honestly, that's why I like Lady Gaga. She's making pop music and making a success of herself, but she's expressive, she's daring, she's interesting, and she's pushing what popular music has sort of stagnated into.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it doesn't have to be out there, I just mean a lot of the bands (for example what passes for rock bands now days) seem to what to fufill a certain need and don't really seem to be about growing as artists. They don't have to be over the top, I just feel like they don't think they even have a chance to bring art into their shows because people wouldn't accept it. There just don't seem to be (for me) anything close to what the classic rock bands were (which is why I tend to be more into indie bands).

Oh, I adore Lady Gaga! I fully agree, she's a breath of fresh air.
