Eh. The reason I never could get into the whole series was because I hated the very juvenile cringe humor, even when I was younger.

Have you watched beyond the first episode? I’m super confused by this attitude because the show seems perfectly in line with past series to me (especially if you’re comparing the early AtLA eps and not the best of seasons 2 and 3). The rectangle thing is creepy as heck, episode 6 was flirting with horror. The humor is the same as it’s always been, and better than more recent stuff like The Dragon Prince where no one is allowed to shut up for ten seconds. It’s a show for kids just like the original was, if it feels aimed lower maybe that’s because fans have spent 15+ years being all ‘the original is totally secretly for adults guys.’

The first episode of ATLA is pretty much the same tbh. I was already an adult when ATLA aired, so no childhood nostalgia goggles here. I only kept watching because all my friends had promised me it got really, really good.

The episode you're talking about literally has a disabled homeless girl searching through garbage looking for food. Meanwhile a militaristic "Brigade" is drafting teenagers from their own homes in the name of keeping their city up to an ideal.

I just don't see how any of that is simple or childish.

Haven't gotten around to SNW yet (I know there are things in it I'd enjoy... and a lot that will piss me off, too), so the only Pike I can really judge is the version that's just proto-Kirk but weird about women.

My latest hyperfixation has a small fandom and now that the show’s over, the fandom’s basically dead and I feel strangely lost because I’ve never been in a small fandom or one that died so quickly. I still want to talk about it and obsess over details and read fanfics, but there’s basically nothing now.

I've never understood why death is censored in kids shows , but having characters experience fates far worse than death is peachy (eg. Being sent to places of torment, becoming a vegetable, being turned into a fully conscious immobile inanimate object for eternity that is unable to even scream, being buried alive while immortal, etc)

Case in point: the 4 kids dub of yugioh. Apparently death is too hardcore/scary for children, but having characters being sent to the shadow realm subjected to unspeakable torture for all eternity is totally okay. Seriously.

I prefer Jynx's original black design over her purple skinned design. When I was a kid also thought that the blackness were shadows, not literal black skin.

I usually love a good piece of fictionalized history, provided that it doesn't atke itself too seriously and is clear about this not being real events.

Lizzie Borden though. It could almost be forgiven for just committing to the fantasy. But I can't get over them not even trying to use THE MOST INTERESTING ACTUAL FACTS OF THE CASE! Dude, we all know that Lizzie Borden had some sapphic possibilities, okay. But leaving out her whole motive of murdering her stepmother first because of the inheritance? Her constantly shoplifting?

They didn't even do the Lizzie getting naked to murder! (Which of course is disputed, but it's one of the most deeply cherished theories of the case.) The show ran on the most salacious possible idea of the case, but that was left out?!
