It's the exact same for me :( It's separate: my fandom life, and my real life. It's the reason I don't post fandom stuff on my lj, cause I have rl friends who read it.

[identity profile] asphyxiational.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I have rl people and online people in different groups on LJ. So I can easily just filter out the rl people if I'm talking fandom too much in my entries. D:

[identity profile] ljismahname.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I've always kept fandom and RL separate. Sometimes I'll let things slip through the cracks and it often doesn't go well. Plus my RL friends would laugh me into oblivion if they knew the extent of my fandom-ness.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I admit I'm a little envious of people who can be all out-and-proud with their fandom love, but I am a strict segregationist by choice and necessity. (And if push comes to shove, a denier and an evader of the truth, as I will go to great lengths to avoid humiliation.)

[identity profile] fruiterian.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
kekkaishi doesn't get a lot of love :( i've been reading it for ages and i don't think any of my online or real life friends read it. (and yoshimori's guardian came out so much more badass than i expected~)

but i get what you're saying with the fandom/real life thing D: there's only been a handful of people i've known who were involved with fandom, and it's rare that we dig the same ones.

[identity profile] weinende-rot.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I try to do separate thing myself too. It's not always goes exactly well:
1.Me is talking animatedly about some fandom stuff.
2.Non-fandom friend, looking both disturbed and bored at the same time.

*sigh

[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comment basically explains why I love it when I go to conventions so much.

[identity profile] weinende-rot.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've got fandom friends, so it's ok. \our conventions are small and mostly suck anyway\ But sometimes I just forget who I'm talking with. Ooops~

[identity profile] chrysolithe.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I was just getting ready to post this exact same thing. It sucks. =(

[identity profile] weinende-rot.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, disturbing people is amusing though :D

[identity profile] stupidaquarius.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda do this too. But not because my RL friends will shit on me for liking particular stuff or anything - they already know my "weird" tastes (and tbqh I have no business with anyone who has major issues with/thinks less of me becasue of what I like) - they're just not interested in it. I don't have any RL fandom friends ):

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You and me both. I only post fandom stuff filtered to heck since I have RL friends on my flist and my journal is easy to link back to the real me, and I join and post to fanfic coms under a different name. Even my bf doesn't know, and sometimes I'll make a joke about slash or some other fandom thing and he'll remark that it's weird how much I know about fandom phenomenon or lingo. (Though I told him once that I read fanfic once in awhile as sort of off hand, 'ha I totally don't do this seriously or frequently it's just idle curiosity' sort of way. Which is not entirely accurate.)

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I do too. I've tried to get my rl friends into fandom and it doesn't go too well. So I prefer to avoid the awkwardness there and with any new friends. But it thrills me when I meet someone irl who is into fandom and open about it.
So maybe that's your best luck, to look for or meet up with someone specifically into fandom irl.

I posted this secret, and all of your replies made me feel a lot better about it. I hide my fandom life from my real life, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I have one RL person that I talk with about certain series, but I don't feel comfortable enough to reveal the extent of my participation in fandom to them, (writing and reading fanfics, doujinshi, etc.)

Well, it was nice to get that off my back!

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just to throw the other perspective out there: pretty much everyone in my RL social circles knows that I game, go to cons, and belong to fannish groups online. Any friend I interact with on a regular basis knows I write fic, and where to go to find it, if they're curious. I have spent too much of my life in too many closets to tolerate another one.

YMMV, of course.

[identity profile] bloods-a-rover.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty bad about this too. But recently I've made a RL fandom friend, and I'm slowly learning to let my fandom nerd show a bit. It's a weird, new experience. But also kinda nice.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing, OP. There's fandom, and there's my RL, and I have never wanted to cross the streams.

[identity profile] lemiserabelle.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's been years since I've participated in a fandom but I lurk hardcore in several places and I have never said a word to anyone IRL about any of it. I've lurked in comics fandoms for nearly a year now and only my closest friend even knows that I read them in the first place. Oddly, I've never felt the need to mix real life and online life, even when I did do fandom stuff years ago (on another non-LJ site).

It's kind of relaxing. You never, ever have to worry about one affecting the other. When RL goes to crap, the net is there to distract you. When your fandom gets wanky and the best fic writers leave, you can still go about your day normally. I like the degree of control it allows me.

[identity profile] dried-frog-pill.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Add me to the list of people who tend to keep fandom and RL separate - although I do get a weird happy kick/uncertain vibe if I learn someone I know in RL is also involved in fandom - and I'd add more coherency to this but I just want to say Kekkaishi omgggg I need to catch up

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
The first reply has a Bernard Black icon squeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I go almost the other way. All my RL friends know at least which shows/bands I like (and those are my two main genres of fandom.) I bring them up.

I find I HATE sharing my RL with fandom even though it would sometimes make sense. One show I watch has made references to my college, and I want to get excited but I can't because no one knows my college.
