That really sucks. Especially writing you dub-con when you specifically identified it as a squick.

You're pretty gracious for not throwing in the towel on Yuletide altogether. I know that someone is going to be lucky next year to be assigned someone like you, rather than someone like your Yulegoat.

[identity profile] rampant-chaos8.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry... that sucks :(

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people just shouldn't be writing gift fic if they can't properly follow through. I've carefully looked over my recipient for the shindig I signed up for. I checked out their personal journal and the stuff they like. Hopefully, I'll be getting it right. Who wants to be that douchebag that gives a shitty fic? Not I.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people try their best, but know what they've worked on is terrible. It just can't be helped.

However, there is no excuse for ignoring someone's squicks when they've explicitly laid them out. Sure, it's a gift, but you have the right to be disappointed because it was a less thoughtful or considerate one.

[identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes... people just can't squeeze out a gift-worthy fic. It's never happened to me, but I've seen it done to others. It sucks, but getting something with squicks that you requested not to have is pretty much inexcusable. :( I'm sorry it was such a disappointment and the only thing I can say is to try again next year.

(And now I want to know which fic this was. haha)

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
We've all written fics we didn't love for challenges, and that's how it goes. But writing something that goes against squicks you specified just isn't cool.

(Man, I've actually never had any of my recipients write a letter! I can't imagine just ignoring it.)

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I bailed out on Yuletide this year because after beating my head against the fic for a couple of weeks I knew I wasn't going to be able to write the story my recipient really wanted to read. (When you can't get past 200 words, you know it's bad.)

I suspect your writer skimmed your letter without really reading it, and then remembered it back asswards. Which doesn't excuse anything.

I sure hope next year you get something brilliant.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks. People shouldn't be writing gift fics if they aren't up to actually trying. It'd be one thing if they did and the fic turned out terrible anyway--at least they tried--but it sounds like they didn't try that hard since things that squick you that you outlined ended up in there. Hope you get a fic from someone who pays proper attention next year!

[identity profile] ingridmatthews.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that was really passive-aggressive of them to not only toss off a crappy fic, but to specifically include things you don't like. Hopefully giftfic-karma will come back to be a bitch to them later. :(

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to hear that, anon. :(

The bad writing might be negligible since not everyone can be a good writer, but to put in squicks like that was horrible of them. I don't think you should be grateful for that, since obviously the author who wrote the fic has no clue what Yuletide is about.

Like anon above said, you are pretty gracious for not giving up on Yuletide because of this. I hope karma finds you and gives you the best match possible next year!

[identity profile] smallearthcat.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? This makes me want to write you fic. Except, you know, I have no idea if our fandoms overlap or anything, but still. Hopefully you'll get something better in the future.

This. *points up*

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I've started thinking about doing Yuletide for myself for this reason. At least I can respect a squick.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Optional details are optional but including stuff the person doesn’t like really isn’t in the spirit of the thing. I’m usually squarely in the “Don’t complain about a gift” camp but I really don’t blame you for being disappointed.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*HUGS*

That is made of suck and I'm so sorry she did that to you. :(

That's terrible. I'm sorry you got a shitty fic, but I'm happy it hasn't turned you off Yuletide. I kinda hope that your writer got a really crappy fic in return. Or ends up with a bad giftfic at a later exchange. Even though that doesn't solve anybodies problems.

I bailed on two fic exchanges this year. I feel terrible about it, but it got to the point where I knew I just wasn't going to be able to produce something anywhere close to what my recipient wanted. So my choices were to either default or write a crappy fic they wouldn't be happy with. I went with defaulting being the lesser of two evils there.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
i saw your story somewhere before (i think it was on fandom wank) and most people were on your side. it was a very stupid move from this author.

i wish you a beautiful fic last year, dear op :)

I'm sorry, OP. =/ That really, really sucks. I hope that maybe you can get some better gift fic in the future.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
That really sucks, dude. I'm glad it hasn't ruined your experience totally, though. Hopefully next time will be a lot better. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
You can report that to the mods, I think, if it really doesn't fit your request at all. I could be wrong.

Better luck next time OP :).

[identity profile] newengland32.livejournal.com 2010-01-13 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Aw that sucks

[identity profile] elliptic-eye.livejournal.com 2010-01-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks, and writing in a plainly labeled squick is egregious, but you are made of class for not letting the experience turn you off of Yuletide.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-01-13 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, all, for the comments. I know that I should've worded my secret better (saying the fic was "terrible", even if I believe it to be true, was harsh, and the writer doesn't deserve that), and I know it can't be helped if something doesn't live up to my expectations (that's the nature of challenges), but the squicks were a serious let-down. I don't believe she (or he) meant to include them, but I can't help the way I feel. I had a lot of fun writing and reading/commenting, though, so I am definitely coming back next year. :)
