If you call them "homosexuals" I'm already kind of dubious.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. Then again, it would've been more telling if they said something to the effect of "MY BFF IS HOMOSEXUAL, SO I CAN'T" etc, etc

My reaction exactly.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So lets call them fags then.

Lol, exactly.

Uh, when did "homosexual" become an unacceptable term? Are you fucking kidding me?

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS

Yeah, x 2. I'm fucking confused and anyone who would care to enlighten me, feel free.

It's becoming the trend now that people writing or speaking from an anti-GLBT perspective will tend to use the term homosexual, whereas people who have no issue with GLBT folks or consider themselves allies or whatever will just say gay or lesbian or queer or whatever other word that actually makes sense in context and sounds like a normal person talking normally would sound. The word homosexual has the advantage of both sounding detachedly clinical, like an illness or dysfunction, plus it contains the word sexual and so it contributes nicely to a lot of arguments which center on reducing gay people to nothing but the sexual acts they may or may not perform with each other.

It's by no means an inappropriate word, though, and I would ascribe no malice to anyone who used it. It just tends to raise some flags of suspicion when homosexual is used in a situation where gay would make more sense syntactically.

Thanks for delineating it better than I ever could have hoped to.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I do definitely see the part about reducing it to sexual acts. That's interesting.

The odd thing is that I have my own aversion to using the word "gay" just because to me it kind of has a stereotype connotation (in my mind "gay" also meaning "happy" seems to indicate that it's some kind of euphemistic term for flamboyance, though I was recently told the two meanings never had anything to do with each other). I tend to say "homosexual" just because the most technical term tends to be safe/politically correct, and saying "gays" plural always sounds terrible to me.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly this. I already knew that the word "homosexual" has taken on a negative connotation nowadays but for some reason the word "gays" just really rubs me the wrong way and sounds really dismissive to me.

Good explanation.

Well, you have a point there, but I think it has to do with the intent to which the word is being used. To me, it sounds like the OP was using it in the same context as someone would use the term "African-American," because people feel like that's the most PC/correct term to use. I can see how it sounds clinical and detached, though.
