probably one of the worst ships I've ever seen in film. made worst by trying to be a good one.

it's nice to know that other people like it though, reminds me that no matter what it is or how I feel about it, there are people out there who feel the exact opposite about something.

Why don't you elaborate?

I've always felt they have the most default main dude/main lady relationship ever. It seems they only love each other because they're the main characters and they're supposed to, in the name of the plot. They are both so cold, aloof and stiff it's hard to see any kind of chemistry between them, and Keanu Reeves looking spectacularly undaunted in 95% of the scenes doesn't particularly help their case. Also, I don't really care for concepts like love at first sight, predestined soulmates and such (funny, comming from a CLAMP fan).

That said, I ship it like it's my freaking job. I don't know why, I've never understood what it is I love so much about them. The way their relationship develops in Reloaded and Revolutions is much more my thing, the loyalty, the trust, how they're both each other's right hand and the whole "the two of us against the world" thing. But I shipped it like burning from the get-go, I cried like there was no tomorrow when she died even though anyone could see that one coming from miles away, and to this day they're still one of my OTPs and I LOVE them in bold capslock.

You know, I'm not a big fan of the Matrix and agree totally with your first paragraph (even the CLAMP part, LOL), but I have to say that I can't think of any other example of a pairing that carried over into one or more sequels and was still interesting, in fact probably a lot more interesting later on in the story. The depth of their commitment was more believable than the falling in love part, which makes for a rare believability of the passionately-ever-after to supposedly destined couples. Not that they lived happily ever, but...

While most people love the will-or-won't-they and the courtship, I don't find that half as interesting as the slow building of trust, confidence and commitment. Since I seem to be alone at that, you don't get much stories with a focus on that kind of relationships. Well, they're sometimes featured as a side dish for the more usual romance main course (icon related, or, say, Fai/Kurogane), but in those cases the romantic feelings are usually understated and subtexty, because apparently you can't have a firmly stablished bond and be passionately in love at the same time.
As you have pointed out it's fairly rare to see a long story (be it movies, tv series, manga, whatever) where the characters first proceed to get together Because They're Meant To Be, and then fight the bad guys together/go about the plot together/do any kind of relevant stuff together. The Bond Girl treatment is much more common.

I'm a diehard Neo/Trinity shipper (I mean, OTP FOR LIFE kind of diehard :p), and I pretty much agree with everything you're saying. Except for the chemistry part; I actually think that Keanu and Carrie-Anne have a lot of chemistry, but it's pretty subtle and not overtly obvious (which I think is consistent with their characters, and made it believable for me).

But yeah, it was how their relationship develops so beautifully in Reloaded and Revolutions that made me such a diehard shipper, even though I shipped it like it was my job from the first time they were onscreen together. I can't even really explain it either, it just... it's one of the sweetest and most awesome things I've ever seen. The scene that really gets me is the one right before they leave for the machine city, and they both admit that they're scared. Honestly, that scene is probably my favorite in the entire trilogy. <3
