Trousers is a perfectly acceptable Americanism, though it definitely has a different connotation. :) In UK fandoms I keep my spellings but generally use the UK-preferred noun in the prose. Seems odd to use one term in prose but a different one if the same item/concept comes up in the dialogue. It's easier to just use the regionally appropriate one across the board, especially if it's a word that exists somewhere in American vernacular.

Exactly my view. I personally find I end up confusing myself if I use different terms depending on whether or not a character said or thought it. It just struck me as more consistent and less jarring to the reader to keep it all the same. Though I admit I just can't let go of Us in words like "colour" so I don't generally change my spelling either!

Where in America? Just curious, because I live in Western Canada...and I've never said "trousers" in my life unless I was quoting a Brit.

It's rare in spoken language but you definitely see it, especially in reference to merchandise--at Macy's, (http://www.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=408414&cm_mmc=GoogleShopping-_-4-_-30-_-MP430) at Target, (http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/182-8867921-3478407?ASIN=B000XLZF38&AFID=Froogle&LNM=B000XLZF38%7CMossimo_Black_Denim_Trousers_Dark_Blue&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B000XLZF38&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001) at Gap (http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=620841002&tid=gofr1r) etc. It's also retained in "trouser socks." I don't know if my conception is regionally or family-influenced, but I consider "trousers" dress pants or slacks. Pants are my primary noun, but I'll use trousers occasionally to describe stuffy things I wear to court. Especially if they're wool. It may be fading, but it still exists in the American vernacular.

...As a caveat, I wouldn't use "trousers" in dialogue for an American-based fandom (unless it were appropriate for the character--Walter on Fringe saying "trousers" would seem perfectly in character to me) because it is much less commonly used, but I don't consider it a British noun and it doesn't leap out at me in prose the way bonnet or torch or arse would.
